Page -4- NEW BUILDING INSPECTOR SETTLES IN Roy Brownlow, our new Building Inspector, is busy getting his office M in order at the Town Hall. We visited him a few days after he started * and found him well organized already. His certificates are posted on the wall and pictures of his wife, Joy, and his 14-month-old son, Tyler, grace his shelves. The office is his! Roy is something of a rarity in that he is a native of Bogue Banks, having been born and brought up in Emeraldlsle where he still lives. This is where he got his start as a surfer. He has traveled to many places to compete — including Hawaii — and was East Coast surfing champion at one time. In order to support this pastime he began working in construction and found that he liked it. He began to study, obtained several certificate including drafting, and has his eye on at least 15 more certificates at this time. He worked as a sub-contractor before he obtained the Level I Building inspector license which qualifies him for his job here. Not stopping there, he is a probationary II already. Before coming here he served a year as a building inspector for the County. Roy is pleased to be working here in Pine Knoll Shores where standards are high. He has always considered it the epitome of "quality coastal development!" He looks forward to meeting the people of Pine Knoll Shores and hopes that they will feel free to share their comments and observations with him. We wish him well. MARY KORFF OUR NEW NEIGHBORS ^ At the time of this interview, Patti and Charlie Swetz had been livin^J here in "retirement" for 7 weeks and they were still trying to find time enough to do all the things they thought they would be doing once they reached that happy state! But right away you can see that they are not the "retiring" kind. You get the feeling they will always be busy. The Swetz bought their Arborvitae house three years ago and waited impatiently in Bladwin, N. Y. for the day they could retire, sell their Baldwin house and take up residence here on the Pine Knoll Shores Canal. Once here there was lots to do to put the house in the dream house condition they wanted for it. When I came to call I found Charlie setting pavement tiles and Patti greeting me with a paint brush in hand! They were working right up to the minute I was expected. But they willingly dropped every thing and, along with their lab, Luci [short for "Lucifer" which they would have called her had she been a boy] greeted me warmly. They're friendly-- and flexible. I learned that Patti and Charlie met when both of them worked for the N. Y. Telephone Company. Charlie retired from the same company some 33 years later although he did transfer once to ATST and then back again. Patti left the company to raise her family and later worked for the Baldwin School system tracking down truants, among other duties. The family consists of Richard, with IBM and living in New York, and Sharon, who is married and has just left this country to live in New Zealand for a couple of years. The Swetz are looking forward to a visit there you can bet! It was Sharon who steered them here to Pine Knoll Shores in the first^B place some six years ago. She was at Duke getting her degree in Hospital Administration and had no summer vacation. She suggested that they come
