THE ANCIENT MARINERS '
While we are only in the middle of summer, bowling is just around the
corner, or, almost so.
Our new season will start October 7th, preceded by a kick-off dinner
at the Sheraton on September 24th. More details later.
We have always welcomed substitutes and, any Pine Knoll Shore residents
who wish to join us, please call our Secretary, Arnold Smith at 247-6062.

OWLS HAS A NEW HOME ! ! !
On August 12, we moved into the former Pam's Day Care Center on High
way 70 next to Lowe's. It's not easy moving over 50 animals [most of them
baby birds who need to be fed every 30 minutes], their food and cages, and
all our other "stuff" in one day, but we did it gladly because of what the
move represents. The new 3400 square foot building on 1-1/2 acres of land
is a dream come true. Now we have room to take in as many animals as need
us -- admissions for this year are already over 850 -- and give them the
quality care they deserve. We'll finally have a lab area and a surgery
room; visitors can view educational displays and some of our permanently
disabled birds of prey; children can learn about wildlife in our classroom.
Because of the generosity of the Walden Trust of Pittsburgh, who are
guaranteeing our loan, we are able to purchase this wonderful new facility...
but we still have to make the mortgage payments! It is frightening to take
on a debt like this, but because of people like the "Pine Knoll Shore-ites",
we know we can do it. You have supported us so generously for the last 3
years, and we hope and trust that you will continue to do so.
Our ultimate goal is, of course, to build a permanent hospital in PKS,
but now we have time--years if necessary--to raise the money and to find
out just what our long-range needs are. I am overwhelmed by what we have
accomplished so far; let's all keep working together for wildlife!
OWLS NEEDS: Clothes washer in good working order; Fiberglass pools; roofing
materials; stainless steel examining table; driveway paving; desk chairs;
conference table/chairs, etc. etc. etc. ! ! !
