Should the phone go unanswered, help is sent. Lifeline also has units that are voice activated. The device also works as a smoke alarm by signaling Lifeline whether you are home or not. In the area, several clubs and churches own Lifeline systems and provide them to people who need the service but cannot afford it To purchase the Lifeline equipment, each unit costs $650 and then, after the $25 installation fee, there is an annual maintenance fee of $50, but no monthly fees. If you are interested, please contact Willie Johnson at Carteret Hospital. She is the Lifeline Coordinator and will explain all the details of the system. Commissioner Musgrave announced that a public hearing to consider a request by Vision Cable for a 15 year franchise will be held Tuesday, September 8 at 2:00 PM, Town Hall. Public participation is encouraged. Commissioner Hasulak announced that information conceming an interim water rate increase has been mailed to all customers. Attorney Whitfond stated that a final order can change these rates. There has been a delay on system specific information as requested by the Town. Frank Schwartz, Professor, Institute of Marine Sciences stated that he has taken samples from the Canal since March and has found 37 species of fish. Boric Acid is a non-toxic white powder you can buy at any drug store. It woris on ants and roaches. Spread in comers, cracks, closets, etc. Safer for people and pets. Congratulations to heri T Sincere thanks to the McConk/s of the Iron Steamer Rshing Pier Resort for their cooperation with the Eastem Surfing Association. The Iron Steamer Resort recently hosted surfing, fishing, and various tournaments, bringing much enjoyment to many people. Thanks to the A.C. Halls' of the Atlantis Lodge for hosting the OWLS Sand Sculpture Contest, which was a great success. AQUARIUM UPDATE The fall program schedule is now available, stop by the Aquarium and pick one up. The Aquarium sponsors special activities throughout the fall season. Onboard cmises offer a greater variety of species collected during the fall months. Other outside activities take advantage of the mild weather and the availability of programs increase. The North Carolina Dive Weekend will be held on Octobers & 10,1992. The weekend activities will include guest speakers, slide programs, films and workshops focused on scuba diving in North Carolina Waters. The North Carolina Surf Rshing Weekend will be presented on November 14 & 15, 1992. This two-day program will address the basics of surf fishing; including tackle, technique, and preparing your catch. The N.C. Aquarium Society offers Aquarium memberships that include a mailing of seasonal program calendars directly to your home, giftshop and special activities discounts, along with other membership benefits. Membership subscription pamphlets are available at the Aquarium and give a complete listing of society membership benefits. Bogue Banks Library August is our winding down month here at the library after a very busy summer. Our Children's Reading Program ended with awards and an ice cream and cookie party the last Wednesday in July. The Program was very much enjoyed by the participating children. If you brought your grandchildren, we appreciate your efforts. We had wonderful attendance for our films too. The book sale conducted by the Friends of the Library this past Saturday, August 9, was well attended and sales were good. If you wished to purchase or donate books I hope you were able to do so. Our annual Storytelling Festival was held August 10 at the Aquarium Auditorium. Approximately 280 children and adults listened to some great tales and interesting tellers. The B&T books we have ordered for the month of August are: Double Deuce bv Parker, Eve of the Storm by Higgins, Gerald's Game by King and Truman by McCullough. ’Between the Bookends" book discussion group will begin their monthly meetings, September 14 at 10:00 AM, library auditorium.
