THE SHORELINE GARDEN CLUB Bidding was brisk, competition keen at the garden auction which followed the business meeting of the Garden Club, May 12. Auctioneer Ken Hanan's tantalizing descriptions of wide ranging varieties of plants and garden sundries set a fast pace for the bidding and brought delight to the winners. From a five foot ficus tree, pencil cactus, gorgeous bromeliads, blackberry lillies, spearmint, peppermint, chives, lemon geranium, acuba and hanging baskets of flame and fuchsia New Guinea impatiens to ceramic vases, baskets, gardening gloves and even a tree feeder — all elicited competitive aaion on the floor. Members also participated in a summer recipe exchange. Refreshment chairman. Peg Hereth, and Jean Jane', Marge Michael and Lois Jean O'Keefe whetted appetites with homebaked banana, pumpkin, and old fashioned Boston Brown bread and cream cheese and a heaping bowl of fresh fruit. The centerpiece was a showstopper—a 24" topiary tree artfully fashioned fi'om dried flowers--one of five that members Lois Jean O'Keefe, Vivian MacDonald, Marge Sellers, Betty Stanton, Ann Hitch, Joan Dawson, Bobbie Ready, Charlotte Sheard and Joan Smith painstakingly created for submission and judging at the Convention of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc, to be held in Ashville at the Grove Park Inn, May 17-18. President Marge Sellers made a happy announcement that the PKS Garden Club had been awarded three certificates of honor from the North Carolina Garden Club. The club's 1993 yearbook won third place (Our local Seashore Council of Garden Clubs, of which Lois Jean O'Keefe is president took first place!); the second honor was bestowed for outstanding service to the North Carolina Garden Club; and third, for generous support of "Tomorrow's Legacy"- -the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo and Daniel Boone Native Gardens near Ashville, created and managed by the North Carolina Conservancy and Scholarship Fund. The Board of Direaors thanked Clare Winslow and her assistants for their efforts in beautifying the island at Oakleaf and Salter Path Roads by planting dozens of vermilion begonias and laying down handsome ground mulch. The next meeting on June 9th will be a luncheon at the Galley Stack Resuurant and installation of new officers for 1993-94.
