•'THE SHOREUNF- Volume 6 Issue 3 ♦ EDITOR’S CORNER Top of the Mornin' to you! Be'gorra spring will soon be here! Irish I'm not, well.... maybe a wee bit but after the tough last two months of bad weather it will be wonderful to see daffodils, crocus, tulips and the like! My column this time will seem long but I'm including an article from our Assistant Chief of the Pine Knoll Shores EMS. In September of'93 I took classes to become an AA/First Responder, I passed that and since November I've been taking classes to become an EMT. I truly believe I've found my calling. Please read the following article entirely and think it over! WE NEED YOU! DIAL 911 in an emergency and a team of trained and dedicated Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's) arrive at your home with an ambulance in a matter of minutes. These technicians and drivers are Pine Knoll Shores residents who are volunteers and donate their services free of charge. They are trained to respond quickly, administer Have Yif Found the Pot of Gold? Yes! I Live In Pine Knoll Shores emergency aid and oxygen if necessary, and transport to the hospital rapidly, but safely. The service is free to residents of our community, and the cost of equipment, supplies and insurance is covered by town taxes. It is estimated that to cover the town 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with minimal coverage by paid EMT's and drivers, would cost in excess of $250,000 per year (Not including social security payments, benefits etc.) The cost is staggering - imagine what it would mean in our tax dollars if we were forced to resort to paid services. Our EMT's staff responds to well over a hundred residential medical emergencies and transports a year. The EMT safety curtain is always there for you during an emergency - with speed and care. As always, we are in URGENT need of additional EMT's and ambulance drivers to March 1994 provide these vital services. Many dedicated people have given their time to this community service, and after serving their community for a period of time, others move in and take their place. This ongoing replenishment of time and dedication keeps the squad current and vigorous. Now We Need You. Courses are given periodically by the community college for new members. The lifesaving skills learned in these courses are valuable to both the community and to you and your family on a personal basis. Think about finding a friend and taking the course.
