They are the best! in the past few weeks, residents and tourists have recognized the professionalism and concern they demonstrate in their work. Their efficiency in dealing with certain situations, from a child trapped in an elevator, a resident locked out of his home, to resolving a disturbance, have been visibly appreciated and exemplify the high standards of our Police Department. JUNE BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MEETING FY 94-95 BUDGET ORDINANCE ADOPTED • At the June 14 meeting the Board of Commissioners adopted the Fiscal Year 94-95 Budget Ordinance of $1,101,288. Included in the revenues estimate is one-half cent ad valorem tax hike. There were some concerns expressed as to why the Town needed to raise its taxes from 20.5 cents to 21.0 cents per $100 of valuation. The major cost changes in estimating the budget this year were the desire to provide citizens with the services which support the lifestyle they have come to expect here, and at the same time practice fiscal responsibility. Changes from last year include^ an additional police officer, a part time employee in the inspections office, an additional refuse collection each week during the summer months, recycling for the entire town and a dredging project in Bogue Sound channel. Of paramount concern is the increase in solid waste disposal fees from $45 to $54.50 per ton for household garbage and $20.00 per ton for yard waste. Many municipalities are dealing with this expense by charging tax payers an additional fee for refuse collection and offering no commercial collection. These major increases, plus other needed cost increases, amounted to almost $150,000 in increased cost for the fiscal year 1994-95. Through good Town .management and control of their expenses, plus an improving economy, the Town was able to absorb these increases with only a $14,000 increase in revenue to balance the budget. Of inestimable value to Pine Knoll Shores are the volunteers who give unselfishly of their time and talents to our Town:from elected officials, who serve as department heads, to the volunteer Emergency Medical Squad and Fire Department members and those who serve on various committees which contribute to our Town. In twenty years we have grown from the 68 citizens who voted to incorporate, to the 1500 full time residents.
