NORTH CAROLINA AQUARIUM
BABY SEA TURTLES RESCUED
The aquarium received
18 loggerhead hatchlings on
October 2, rescued on Caswell Beach near
Wilmington by sea turtle project volunteers
Jane and Milton Reece of Yaupon Beach,
The aquarium was notified of the rescue and
met the Reece's at Sneads Ferry for the
transfer of the turtles. The hatchlings
appeared to be in good condition and are
being kept in the husbandry department
behind the scenes. Bob Jones, aquarist, is in
charge of caring for the young turtles and is
most anxious to get them to take food. As of
Oct. 4, several had begun eating, although it
is not unusual to lose a few.
Once the turtles are feeding regularly,
four will be put on display in the aquarium
"turtle nursery" where the public can watch
their progress. All the turtles will be kept for
at least a year. Some may be given to other
aquariums for display and the remainder will
be released into the sea.
Because of this year's hurricanes, the
success of sea turtle hatchlings is down
greatly. According to Ruth Boettcher, N,C,
Wildlife Resources Commission Sea Turtle
Project Coordinator, many nests were
flooded, washed out completely, or buried
too deep in sand for a successful hatch.
Beaches from Emerald Isle to Kure Beach
sustained severe losses, nearly 100 per cent.
Remember the Aquarium's new winter
hours. Films, talks and programs run daily 9
a,m, to 5 p,m,, including Sundays. Pick up
a fall calendar to see what's scheduled, or
call 247-4004 for information.
