She welcomed members from ^ the Emerald Isle and Cape Carteret Garden Clubs. Irene Doremus, First Vice President, introduced the speaker, John Fussell III, a self-employed Biologist involved with contracted projects for such organizations as the National Park Service. He has also been part of the "Bird Count" for Carteret County, taking the count of birds that fly through the County each winter since 1962. He is the author of two popular books: "Finding Birds in Carteret County" and "A Birder's Guide to Coastal North Carolina." In his talk about birds, he pointed out, through a slide presentation the often negative impact "homo sapiens" has had on the bird population in the county since 1900. He also noted that this is an "El Nino" year and rare birds could be blown off course and find their way to our county this winter. Olga Welsh, First Vice President in charge of projects, distributed long leaf pine saplings to members. A general distribution of saplings had been scheduled for November 13 and 14 at Brock Basin. The December 10 meeting will take place at the ocean front home of jane Page. It will feature a "Show and Tell" of Christmas ornaments and decorations and a sharing of Christmas memories. 2
