Ancient Mariners Bowling News The Ancient Mariners have finished their season now and on the 20th of this month wili find out who the big winners of the league are. I don't want to give away secrets so you will have to wait until May to find out who walked away with the prizes. There has been some really good bowling during the season. Some of the great games were 170 by Stacey Veros, my captain, Les Scarpone with a 235, Doe Martynowski had a 170, Dorothy Schrader a 182 and Don Smith a 184. There were many other great games, too many to mention here. But there were the usual bad games by some of us, myself included, where we were lucky to make 100. But it was all in fun even if we didn't make the prize table. The Mariners will enjoy a dinner and awards ceremony at the Ramada Inn on the NOKTHCAROLINA AQUARIUMS 20th of this month. It will be a great closing for a good year of fun, comradeship, and of course bowling. Submitted by Nancy Oakley May is "school group time" at the Aquarium. Some 30,000 students visited the aquarium last year and the majority came during May. The best time for area residents to visit during May is in mid afternoon. May is also when the Aquarium begins many of its outdoor programs, "onboard" collecting cruises, ocean beach explorations, field trips to Cape Lookout, salt marsh walks and canoe trips all begin this month. Outdoor programs require advance registration, and some require modest fees. The Aquarium's annual Sea Turtle Release is set for May 21. This popular trip is always interesting and exciting. Sea turtles cared for at the aquarium, or those that have been transferred to us from other aquariums and educational facilities, are taken aboard the Mystery boat and released into the open sea. It's definitely a Kodak moment. If you've got a fossil fanatic in the family, be sure and sign them up for the Aquarium's "The Tooth About Fossils" program, beginning in May and continuing throughout the summer. Our on-site fossil pit lets hunters dig and keep the treasures they find. For a complete list of spring programs, stop by the Aquarium and pick up a calendar. The Aquarium will begin its summer hours Memorial Day weekend, May 23, with hours 9 am to 7 pm daily. 5
