P K S FIRE DEPARTMENT RODEO-
HUGE SUCCESS
The recently renovated Garner Park
was the scene of the first Pine
Knoll Shores Fire Department Rodeo.
On November 15th the entire Fire
Dept, participated in several practical
competitions, followed by a picnic,
featuring barbecued chicken breasts
(cooked to perfection by the Fire Auxiliary
president, Barbara Flynt) and MANY side
dishes (contributed by the members
wives).
The competitions, directed by Capt.
Dave Gildner, started with a speed test
consisting of the donning of "Bunker Gear"
(Turn out gear-clothes worn while fighting
a fire). The 1998 champion was Lt. Walter
Geist, with firefighter Norm Beattie as
runner up.
The second competition was also a
timed event, that consisted of donning S C
B A (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus)
equipment, while in full Bunker
Gear-ready for entry into a burning
building. The Filan brothers were the two
winners, with Vic barely beating out Bill.
The third competition involved two
man teams. They were required to
remove the Positive Pressure Fan from the
fire truck, carry/wheel it some 30 feet,
start it and direct the air flow into a
basketball hoop, blowing a balloon out of
the net. John Riso and Fred Boring made
up the winning team (55 seconds), while
two teams tied for runners-up—Roger
Middlesteadt and Lt. Ed Schlatterer, and
Lou Tresino and Lt. Duke Foulk (1 minute
7 seconds).
The final competition was one of real
teamwork. It was the "Ladder, Lock &
Hose." Two men removed a ladder from
the fire truck, carried it to the side of a
building while a third man took the
booster hose (charged line) from the
truck, handed the hose up the ladder to
one of the ladder men who locked in and
who started a water stream. The hose and
ladder were returned to the truck, to end
the competition. Lt. Walter Geist, Norm
Beattie and John Riso were first with a
time of 1 minute. Roger Middlesteadt, Lt.
Ed Schlatterer, and Capt. Dave Gildner
were runners up with a time of 1 min. 10
sec.
Trophies were awarded to the winners,
and coffee mugs to the runners up.
The outing was voted a HUGE success,
thanks to the efforts of many people, too
numerous to mention....but you know who
you are. My personal THANKS TO YOU
ALL.
