Page 4 The Shoreline My, 1999 The Aquarium is into the full swing of summer with outdoor field trips and live indoor programs daily, along with Shark Day each Tuesday and Reptile Day each Thursday. Shark and Reptile Days feature films, programs, crafts, learning stations and discovery carts focusing on these interesting animals, and natural relics such as jaws, shells, skins, skulls, egg cases and live specimens let you get a real feel for the creature in question. The aquarium's popular on-the- water programs include "Canoe Outing on Bogue Sound," "On Board" collecting cruises, "Beginning Snorkeling," "Clamming," "Canoe Outing to Rachel Carson Research Reserve," "Crabbing," and other get-wet adventures. Inside, craft classes, live animal programs, films, fossil hunts. Aquarium Jeopardy, and a series of educational classes designed especially for youngsters offer something for all ages. For a complete list of Aquarium activities, stop by and pick up a summer calendar, or call 247-4003 to receive a calendar by mail. Summer hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Labor Day. Openings are still available in the Aquarium's Volunteer Program. Volunteers assist the Aquarium in many ways, including staffing the touch tank, running projectors, greeting school groups, hosting quiz games, staffing discovery stations, assisting with craft activities, and a variety of other duties. Volunteers also receive special Aquarium benefits. To learn more about becoming a volunteer, call Stan Schulz at 247-4004, ext. 134.
