The Aquarium
recently
opened its
newest exhibit,
"Snakes. Hidden
Inhabitants of the
Maritime Forest,"
featuring, live
specimens of venomous and non-
venomous snakes indigenous to the
coastal plain and maritime forest.
The outdoor seasonal exhibit
features rat snakes, water snakes, timber
rattlesnake, eastern cottonmouth and
eastern copperhead. The exhibit is
accessible through the aquarium and is
located on the "Salt Marsh Safari"
boardwalk, a soundside walkway at the
rear of the facility.
The two venomous snakes most
common on Bogue Banks are the
copperhead and timber rattlesnake. In the
coastal plain, the timber rattler is also
called canebrake rattlesnake. Because
snakes are alert predators, they usually
sense a person's approach well in
advance; therefore, few people experience
the excitement of seeing them in the wild.
Snakes are extremely beneficial to
man. They reduce rodent populations that
