This means the Aquarium will be able to continue its fall and winter programs, such as collecting-cruises, canoe outings. Cape Lookout trips, fishing workshops, nautical craft classes, and the popular cooking series, "Guest Chefs' Succulent Seafood." Because of the anticipated closing, the Aquarium will not publish its standard quarterly calendar. Instead, a calendar listing activities and events is being produced monthly. Dates were established for the work committees for the weeding, feeding and trimming of the six public garden areas which were planted and are maintained by the club. Luminaria Chairman Chris Walters announced a workshop on December 3 for the Christmas Eve luminaria display. Paulette Murphy and Barbara Williams are conducting the annual Spring Plant Sale to be held this year on April 29, 2000. Casey Griffin invited participation in a workshop at her home on November 19 to create table arrangements for the annual Domestic Violence Tea. Vivian MacDonald, Horticulture Chairman, reminded members to keep an accurate tally of all flowers and shrubs planted this spring, summer and fall. She distributed a dozen unique aloe plants and passion fruits. An excellent magazine article by Yvette Bannen on the 25h Anniversary Celebration of the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club was published in the current September issue of the North Carolina Gardner. Vice President Lois Jean O'Keefe's "Didjano" was the display, identification and treatment of the black twig borer which has decimated magnolia and dogwood trees on Bogue Banks. She advised breaking off and disposing of the infected areas on reachable branches, spraying the higher ones with the pesticide Dursban. Lois Strube, Mary Heim and Irene Doremus prepared the yummy table treats with Irene also creating the striking centerpiece. Feathery Oriental greenery graced the middle of a smashing 16" black wrought iron circular planter. Daylilies were the topic of speaker Caulm Vesey. Since they are so salt tolerant, they are the perfect plants for coastal gardens, tolerating heavy shade, partial shade and sunny locations. Among the thousand varieties from which to choose, be sure to specify to your garden center that you need a variety that is climatized to region 15, our region here on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina. The internal clocks of these lilies preclude their thriving when transplanted from out of zone areas. To keep a healthy daylily garden divide the plants when crowding occurs with a sharp serrated knife. By Clare Winslow
