NORTHCAROLINA AQUARIUMS As you may know, the Aquarium will not be closing for expansion at the end of December as originally planned. Because of Hurricane Floyd, funds earmarked for many projects across the state have been frozen, or redirected toward flood recovery efforts. This is certainly understandable in light of the devastation suffered by much of eastern North Carolina. The State's redirection of funds means a delay in the start of our expansion here at Pine Knoll Shores, and the Aquarium will remain open through next summer. We are confident, however, that the project will get back on track. We see this as an opportunity to provide residents and visitors with new and interesting programs, exhibits, and events and as particularly good news for the many thousands of students, teachers, families, and Aquarium Society members who visit the aquarium throughout the year. Speaking of events, the Aquarium's Holiday Open House is set for Saturday, Dec. 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is one canned good per person. The day's activities will have a new twist this year, including a special appearance by Santa from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., "Holiday Storytime," featuring Grace and Les Ewen, at 11:00 a.m., "Mike the Magic Man" at noon, a performance by the popular "Four on the Isle" female barbershop quartet at 2:00 p.m., and a hand bell concert by Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church at 3 p.m. The aquarium will be decorated for the season and light refreshments will be served. Make a note on your calendar and plan to join us! The Aquarium will offer free admission to all visitors on Christmas Eve and will be closed Christmas Day. Aquarium hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
