August, 2000
PKS Police Dept.
Equipped with a new set
of laws to guard against
drunk driving, NC law enforcement officers were
out in full force this 4^^^ of July weekend as a part
of the Summer 2000 "Booze It & Lose It" campaign
to remind motorists that impaired driving will not
be tolerated anywhere in the state. Effective July
1, 2000, NC laws:
• Reduced the legal alcohol concentration from
.08 to .04 for persons who have been
convicted of one DWI and have had their
license reinstated.
• Reduced the legal BAC from .04 to .00 for
persons who have been convicted of a second
DWI and have had their license reinstated.
• Require the installation of an ignition-interlock
system in the vehicle of a person who has been
convicted of having an AC of 0.16 or greater.
The Pine Knoll Shores Police Department continues
to support the "zero tolerance" for seatbelt and
child safety seat violations. Also, we continue to
support strict enforcement of the state's DWI laws.
In regards to the DWI laws, we are very concerned
with the increase of underage consumption and
driving violations. In June and the first part of July
we had 9 underage drinking/driving charges. All of
these cases are the reasons we have checkpoints
in Pine Knoll Shores and throughout the entire
state - we do not want to see another young
person, family member or loved one killed because
of drinking and driving. We have also made 9 drug
arrests and recovered stolen property in regards to
our checkpoints and random patrols throughout
our town.
The radar trailer will be back in town soon. We will
be setting it up on Arborvitae and Oakleaf. If you
have concerns about speeders on your street
please let us know!
Finally, the PKS Police Department entered the
2000 Best Dressed Police Department Competition.
This competition attracts entrants from law
enforcement departments across the entire country
that displayed pride in their uniforms. The winning
departments recognize that the public views the
police uniform as a symbol of law and order.
Consequently they maintain the highest standards
in their uniform appearance. I cannot divulge the
results until August (but it is certainly good). Here
is a sample of the photos we entered in this
competition. As you can tell I am very proud of this
department's professional image!
