Page 2 The Shoreline March, 2001 Community Appearance Commission PINE KNOLL SHORES TO BE AWARDED "TREE CITY USA" CERTIFICATE AT BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS MEETING AT 2:00 P.M. ON MARCH 13. This celebration is tlie culmination of voluminous work on the part of Director of Planning and Inspections, Roy Brownlow, assisted by the Community Appearance Commission. 1. One of the requirements of Tree City USA - an offshoot of the National Arbor Day Foundation - is that we have a tree inventory done on all public properties including rights of way. 4. This has now been completed and is available online via the internet. The address is: wvw.facilitvkeeperonline.com/fko/ pineknollshores The public can monitor work done on trees, the tree inventory and create reports. User name is pkscitizen; password is pks (case sensitive- lowercase). 2. Another requisite for "Tree City" was that we have an Arbor Day Celebration. The Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club has been holding such an event for a number of years. This year, they graciously agreed that the Community Appearance Commission - as an integral part of the town - should participate. The upshot is that we all will observe Arbor Day at the Town Hall on Friday, March 16 at 10:00 a.m. M citizens are invited to attend. 3. A further obligation of the "Tree City" designate is the need to offer projects to help improve our environment and our quality of life. In that context, our first project for the year 2001 is our seedling tree give away supported by the N.C. Division of Forest Resources and scheduled for the front lawn of Town Hall from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon on Tuesday, March 27, and from 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28. (The Garden Club will be handling the second day's distribution.) In addition to the shade and beaut/ afforded by trees, they help stabilize the soil by controlling wind and water erosion, help reduce noise levels, cleanse pollution from the air, produce oxygen, and absorb carbon dioxide (which is believed to contribute to global warming) and contribute to enhancing and maintaining property values. As indicated in the headline, the "Tree City USA"^^ presentation will occur at 2:00 p.m. at the March 13^^ Board of Commissioners Meeting. Virginia Russell from the N.C. Division of Forestry will present the certificate to Mayor Musgrave at that time. The Community Appearance Commission is very excited about this happening! It will put us in a position to apply for grants for beautification purposes and other improvement for our town. Planning Board Ordinance Amendment - In an effort to eliminate any non-conforming situations or undue hardship because of the change of Fairways Court from a private to a public street, the Planning Board voted to recommend that Section 21-7(i)(3)(a)(l) of the Town Ordinances be rewritten. This would allow the setback along the eastern! boundary line of those lots west of and abutting Fairways Court to retain a 10' setback. IZZIZIII Z 1"
