Page 6 The Shoreline February, 2002 PKS Garden Club A very lively plant auction was held at the meeting of the Pine Knoll Shores Garden Club on Wednesday, January 9 at Town Hall. Bill Johnston, husband of member Beth Johnston, acted as auctioneer, assisted by Yvette Bannen. He kept the bidding rising and lively with his humorous and sage comments about the plant or shrub up for bid. Beth Johnston, Jeanne Umbarger, Arlene Terrell, Dot Belding, Judy Poit and Lois Jean O'Keefe prepared the scrumptious refreshments for the meeting. The auction was fast moving, competitive and lots of fun! Several varieties of trees were auctioned - fig, magnolia, live oak, red maple and native holly. Shrubs that brought competitive bidding were fatsia, dwarf yaupon, holly, acuba, dwarf nandina and forsythia. The variety of marvelous plants and flowers offered had the air quivering with ever rising vocal bids and waving hands. The keen competition was for spider plants, spiderwarts, strawberry begonias, aloes, jades, coffee plants, orchids, lucky bamboos, crotons, a Thanksgiving cactus, devil's backtDone, hoya carnosa, rain lily, golden lantana, an Amazon lily, peace lily, cyclamen, rosemary, lariope, bromiliads, clivias, calenchoes, and arrowhead vines. Two dish gardens chock full of small plants arranged in their shallow bowls brought healthy competitive bidding. At the meeting's close, members were spotted staggering happily to their cars with armloads of hard won pots of greenery. Vice President, Betsy McGibbon announced that from January 1 to December 31 of 2001, garden club members had worked 515.5 hours weeding and beautifying the public gardens of Pine Knoll Shores. She also demonstrated and shared information about a fascinating lucky bamboo plant that she brought for Show and Tell. It's a member of the dracena family, grows best in water, and has wonderful fat stems that can be curled and spiraled by placing it in darkness, which makes it very pliable. It has pretty little leaves, but the thick green spiral stems are what make it so unique and attractive. Ecology Chairman, Vivian Macdonald reported that 102 crape myrtles, 11 dogwoods, 174 shrubs, 464 wildflowers, 552 bulbs, and 3, 317 various flowers had been planted by Garden Club members from January 1 to December 31, 2001. Luminaria Chairman, Chris Walters was thanked for arranging the beautiful display of luminaria lights encompassing all the marinas and extending the length of Mimosa Boulevard on Christmas Eve. She, in turn. thanked all the members and other town residents who aided with placing and retrieving the candle kits. Francoise Boadman of Station Club in Morehead City will be guest speaker at the next meeting on February 13. His topic will be Gardening with Bulbs. Guests are always welcome.
