The Shoreline March, 2002 NORTH Carolina AQUARIUMS March means spring is right around the corner, and the Aquarium is gearing up for warm weather activities. Along with daily films, programs and videos, the Aquarium will offer a "Gardening With Nature" workshop on March 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. The N.C. Cooperative Extension Service teams up with the Aquarium to bring you this "down to earth" instructional session, and presentations cover a variety of local gardening and landscaping topics. The workshop is free to registered participants with regular paid admission to the Aquarium For workshop details call Bob Patton at 247-4003 ext. 126, or Lisa Wimpfheimer at the extension office at 222- 6352. Youngsters will learn about alligators, see a live alligator up close and make a craft souvenir. The program is designed for ages 4-6 at a cost of $4 per child. Advance registration is required. Because of the program's popularity early registration is advised. To register, call Aquarium at 247-4003. Other Aquarium news includes a new lionfish exhibit, scheduled to open in May. These beautiful and fascinating fish have recently been discovered living among shipwrecks offshore. Inhabiting waters 80-120 feet deep, these graceful and willowy denizens of the sea would seldom be seen by anyone but divers. However, the Aquarium's exhibit will provide a look at these unusual and venomous fish to more than 250,000 visitors a year.
