Pase The Shoreline March, 2002 PKS Police Dept. The Pine Knoll Shores Police Department is now offering "Burglary Prevention Tips" for all of our residents. Burglary accounts for about 16% of all crimes in the United States. A burglary attempt takes place about every eleven seconds. We have a list of precautions that will help us to protect you and your belongings. Measures to improve security include common-sense precautions by police, security surveys of residences and businesses, and the sharing of general information on crime prevention. We have a "Home Security Survey" that we will perform to ensure your home is safe. We will have copies of this information available at town hall and if you would like an officer to come to your home and complete a survey please call (247-4353 ext. 16 or 17) and schedule a time. We will also provide a "Home Inventory Worksheet" for your convenience. If you have additional questions please contact Corporal Jim Parks, the officer in charge of this program. Some of the prevention tips are: 1. Do not hide spare keys. Burglars always seem to find them. Instead, give your keys to a neighbor. 2. Lock your doors and windows when you leave your house. 3. Be sure that your house numbers are large and visible. This will ensure that Police, Fire and Rescue can find your house. 4. Fill out a property check request when you will be out of town. The PKS Police are happy to check your home while you are out of town. More tips are in our handout, which may be picked up at Town Hall! I of anything concerning large numbers of poisonings i the area. The only "shootings" of raccoons, none lately, concerned an animal that was attacking someone and those (animals) aN tested positive for rabies. We have no reports of someone randomly shooting animals in the town. The officers advise that they see the "normal" amount of wildlife out at night except for the raccoons (most of the raccoons were killed from the rabies). If you see anything suspicious, do not hesitate to contact a police officer (the fastest way, during regular business hours call 247-4353, ext. 16, 17 OR County dispatch at 504-4800 and ask for a PKS officer to contact you). If you need any type of police assistance or have any questions during regular business hours (8:00 - 4:30 M-F) please call 247-4353 ext.15, 16 or 17. If all the officers are out on the road then dial 504-4800 (county dispatch) and ask a PKS officer to contact you. Please remember that if you leave a voicemail message, th^ officers may not get the message immediately since they are not in the office all the time. Anytime you need assistance an officer will make contact with you as soon as he/she receives the message. Chief M. M.
