Holiday Season Steps Off
With Annual Parade
By Bob Ruggiero
The Color Guard from the Junior Navy
ROTC at West Carteret High School brought
their flags to parade rest, then raised their
banners high to signal the start of the Pine
Knoll Shores annual Christmas parade. With
the American Flag snapping in the breeze
against a modified blue gray Carolina sky,
the official town recognition of the holiday
season had begun.
Grand Marshal Mayor Joan Lamson led
the parade of dignitaries, including PKS Com
missioners Bob Danehy, Bill Ashland and
Jim Hunter. Next came the highly decorated
floats from the Women’s and Garden clubs
followed by fire and rescue vehicles. Four
Harleys represented a local motorcycle club.
Then from its staging area the Croatan
High School Marching Band struck up a
lively march. The band members stepped off
in perfect cadence, marching as one as every
foot pounded the pavement in unison.
First came the flag bearers, hurling their
colorful wispy material high in the air in a
niighty swirl of color. The Drum Major
brought down his baton and 75 young musi
cians responded. The horns they homed, the
drums they drummed, the flutes they fluted.
Not to be outdone, the trumpets bellowed
their response and, last of all, the oompas do
what oompas do.
As they passed my one person reviewing
stand I raised my hand in a quick salute to the
talented young people.
We saw many happy, smiling faces on the
residents lining the parade route. Halfway
through the parade we caught a brief glimpse
of the sun offering its blessing to the begin
ning of the holiday season.
Finally, the annual parade would not have
been possible without the determined efforts
of Doe Martynowski. Doe did the planning,
organizing, and contacting, even to arranging
a radio interview with a local station. Doe
arranged the order of the march and planned
the extra staging area needed for each parade
participant. Doe deserves a collective town
kiss for all she has done. Many thanks from
all of us.
Santa and helper, aka Nick Policastro and Marge Green prepare to board one of the
dozen decorated golf carts the carried golf and tennis members of BBCC in the annual
Christmas Parade. Policastro and Green are both board members of BBCC.
