April Board of Commissioners Meeting
By Yvette Bannen
The commissioners received comments
from citizens about the 2005-2006 budget.
The budget will be ready for the May meeting
and will then be available for public viewing,
(see related article)
During the public comment period, a
question was raised about why the re-zoning
of the property at the corner of Oakleaf and
Salter Path was back before the
commissioners. The mayor replied that new
information became available about the
condition of the soil subsequent to backfilling
with broken road asphalt in the 50’s.
The contract for the town attorney was
renewed. The retainer is $825.00 a month
and $125.00 per hour for work not covered
by the retainer.
Debris and pilings from the Iron Steamer
pier seem to be cleaned up, but Chris Jones,
the director of inspections and public
property, will wait until the water warms up
before checking under water.
Alternate members Arlene Terrell and
John Halada were approved to fill the
remainder of terms on the Board of
Adjustment.
The Waste Industries contract was
renewed for another year, at a 1 1/2%
increase.
A motion to develop a Conditional Use
ordinance was approved. Because the Town
is facing a lot of redevelopment, it was
deemed necessary to have this type of
ordinance on the books.
Police Chief Culpepper gave his report
and mentioned that the lady who entered a
house through an open garage door and stole
some items had been arrested.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Regarding
the water system, Cavanaugh Engineering
presented its final report and the
commissioners will have a special closed
meeting to discuss whether to move ahead
with negotiations. Cavanaugh found that the
system was basically in good shape. 933
Project: Trying to find two million dollars
more from the federal government to be able
to finish the beach renourishment. These
dollars are very competitive.
During citizens comments a question was
raised about the Town’s liability regarding
the retaining wall at the Iron Steamer property
in the event that a storm would knock it
down and cause a problem for the houses
that will be built behind it. The town attorney
said that the Town would have no liability.

How to Reach
the Police
By Chief Culpepper
We would like to clear up some confusion
on how to contact the Police Department.
Monday through Friday (except holidays)
247-2474 will be answered by a receptionist.
After hours, on weekends, and on holidays,
no officer is in the building. If you need an
officer or have a question, call 504-4800 and
the county dispatcher will either have us
return your call or we can come by your
home. This will get an officer to respond
much quicker than leaving a message at the
building. As always, in an emergency, call
911.
If you call 247-2474 after hours, on
weekends, or holidays an answering machine
will take your call. It might be several hours
before an officer can get in to check the
messages so it is best to call 504-4800 to
reach an officer.
