“The Time Was Right”

This whopper caught off the pier by an
unidentified but elated angler surely
qualified as the largest fish of the day,
with the photo probably winding up In
local newspapers.
The photo is faded
but the smiles were
bright as Shelby
Freeman and an
attractive visitor
held a model of the
sidewheeler
Prevensey at the
opening of the Iron
Steamer Pier.
Sitting or standing, fishing was a relaxing pastime enjoyed by many in
the 1960’s. Parking was at a premium at the Iron Steamer Pier in its
heyday as shown in this 1960’s photo. The parking lot was unpaved in
those years.
The Iron Steamer Pier pretty much stood alone on the Pine Knoll
Shores beach in the early ‘60s. The wing jutting off the eastern side gave
visitors a view of the iron steamer wreck lying below. Heavily damaged
over the years by storms, the pier was removed over the past winter to
clear the way for single family beach homes.
