These included 16 EMS calls and three fire calls as well as four mutual aid for Atlantic Beach. As of May 27, Surf Warning Flags are being installed at all Public Beach Access locations. The flags will be flown daily, warning swimmers and surfers of conditions. Fire and EMS personnel will change flags daily according to surf conditions. Training has begun for personnel on the use of the new Kawasaki watercraft for water rescue. New Town Budget By Dick Reeves Our 2005-06 town budget has been prepared and is ready for public scrutiny at the Town Hall and the library. As always, Betty Carr and her staff have prepared a document that is clear, concise and comprehensive. We urge every taxpayer to read it because it is a good and interesting read as well as a recent history of a town that is vital, growing and running like a well-oiled machine. Among some highlights: • Almost everyone asked believes that our real estate taxes provide most or all of the money needed to run the town. In fact, our annual taxes provide only 22% of the revenue needed to operate PKS (There are almost 50 other sources of revenue to make up the other 78%). • On May 27, a rip-tide flag warning system went into effect on our beach, along with a Wave Runner Rescue Vehicle. We are doing all within our jx)wer to prevent any drowning this summer. • We have welcomed our new Director of Emergency Services, Reed Jarvis, a 32-year veteran of the fire and EMS services. • Even with our aging population, our volunteer services are alive, well and growing. Without our unselfish volunteers our taxes would be at least twice as high. • Our commissioners are taking the steps necessary now to prepare for a very busy summer next year and a considerable influx of visitors when both the new Aquarium opens and the tall ships arrive in Beaufort. • A number of people have expressed concern about the cost of mailing the Shoreline to all residents. It is important to note once again that because it is an all volunteer effort and because the town receives 20% of all advertising revenue, the cost of printing and mailing the Shoreline is fully covered and no tax dollars are involved The budget Hearing is scheduled for June 14,2005 at 2:00 p.m. at the Town Hall. Anyone may appear and ask questions. Our thanks to the staff at the To wn Hall for the hard work that went into this easy-to-read and understand document. Town Yard/Garage Sale The sale will take place in the garage at Town Hall on Thursday, June 16 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Items for sale are computers and key boards, typewriter, telephone, surf board, boogie boards and other miscellaneous items. All sales are final and items not sold will be disposed of. Annual Art Exhibit The Second Annual Art Exhibit & Sale featuring local artists will take place on June 18, 2005 at Bogue Banks Country Club in Pine Knoll Shores. Artwork will be displayed during a Wine & Cheese Reception in the Club Ballroom from 5:00-6:30P.M. followed by Supper on the Sound. Tickets are $18.00 and the public is welcome. Fifteenth Annual Fourth of July Parade It will start in Garner Park at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 4 and will parade up Oakleaf toYaupon, to Cypress, over to Holly and back to Oakleaf ending in Garner Park. At the end of the parade there will be ice, water and watermelon waiting for everyone. Adults and kids (even the canine type) are all welcome! Volunteers Needed With our growing town, we are in need of additional volunteers for our fire and EMS departments. Any capable resident is encouraged to apply for an educational and rewarding experience with the greatest group of guys and gals you’ll find anywhere. If, like many of us, your body is shot but your mind is still working, you might want to serve on the Shoreline staff. The hours are good, the work is interesting and the rewards are great. Call town hall for meeting dates or ask a friend or neighbor.
