Garden Club Luminaria Drive
Aims at Lighting Up the Town
Luminaria kits to give that special
glow to the holiday season are now
being offered for sale by the Pine
Knoll Shores Garden Club. The
kits went on sale December 2 and
Chris Walters, chairperson for the
Luminaria program, says they will
be available at Town Hall through
December 23.
Kits cost $5 and include eight
candles and eight bags in which
to enclose the candles for display.
Proceeds from the sale go toward the
cost of purchasing Luminaria for use
in the town-wide displays the club has
sponsored for more than 30 years.
Hundreds of Luminaria, anchored
in sand-filled jugs, are placed in
prominent locations around town and
lighted on Christmas Eve.
The garden club also seeks
donations from residents to support
the town-wide displays. Donations
may be left in the “honor payment
box” at Town Hall when you buy

Commissioners will be sworn in at the board’s reorganization meeting
Dec. 13. From left are: Jay Kocher, Bonnie Jean (BJ) Peters and Ted

Three New Commissioners Will
Take Their Seats December 13
By Bill
There will be three new faces occupying
commissioners’ seats when the Pine Knoll
Shores Town Board reorganizes December
13 following the November 8 election.
Scheduled to be sworn in that day at the
Board’s regular monthly meeting at 2 p.m. are
Jay Kocher, Bonnie Jean (B.J.) Peter and Ted
Lindblad. They were the top votegetters in
balloting that saw five candidates contending
for three commission seats.
Kocher led the field with 448 votes,
followed by B. J. Peter with 363 and Lindblad
with 362. Larry La Brie, the only incumbent
in the race, missed winning a new term by
a whisker, garnering 14 votes less than
Lindblad.
A pall settled over the election as
news circulated that the fifth commission
White
candidate. Bob Kihlstrom, had died early on
election morning in a hospital in Cleveland.
Kihlstrom, who fell ill a week or so earlier
while visiting family in Ohio, received 265
votes in the balloting. A memorial service for
Mr. Kihlstrom was held at All Saints Church
in Morehead City November 17.
The race for mayor did not present a
contest, with incumbent Joan Lamson
running unopposed for a new two-year term.
She received 515 votes. The newly elected
commissioners will serve three-year terms.
Leaving the Board in addition to La Brie
are Mary Kanyha and Jim Hunter, both of
whom chose not to seek new terms. The trio of
outgoing commissioners will receive parting
