Page 2 The Shoreline December 2005 November Town Board Meeting By Yvette Bannen Because Town Hall was being used for Election Day activities, the Board of Commissioners meeting was held in the conference room of the Public Safety Building. A moment of silence was observed at the beginning of the meeting in memory of Bob Kihlstrom, who had died that morning. Not only was Bob running for town com missioner, he was also half of “B & B” the town maintenance team. Mayor Lamson presented two proclamations, one to J. D. Woolard for his 12 years volunteer service on the planning board, six of them as chairman, and the other to Tom Martynowski for his years of volunteer service in the Fire and EMS Department. Finance Officer Hasulak reported that PKS received the single largest amount ($95,266) of sales and use tax. There was discussion about awarding contracts and it was voted that they would be awarded on a best-value policy, rather than to the lowest bidder. During the announcements, Mayor Lamson disclosed that Anne Blackwell received an award from the Chamber of Commerce for Outrageous Customer Service. Also, because requests have been made, PKS “Merry Christmas Y’all”sweatshirts will be reordered. Town Hall will be closed Dec. 22 through 26. Police During the month of October there were 129 calls for service, including 1 accident, 10 assist other agencies, 14 assist Fire/EMS, 3 town ordinance violations, and 14 welfare checks. Twenty-two citations involving 27 charges were issued for: 1 driving while impaired, 2 speeding, 2 driving while suspended, 8 seatbelt, 4 alcohol violations and 10 other. Six warning tickets were issued. There were 52 residence checks and 353 business checks. On Oct. 4, Lt. Rice was called to the Aquarium for a wreck involving two construction workers. One worker had arrived intoxicated and was offered a ride home, which she declined. As she left, she struck a co-worker’s car causing minor damage. She was located approximately six hours later in Atlantic Beach where Lt. Rice arrested her for leaving the scene of an accident and driving while license revoked. She had been arrested the day before in Adantic Beach for leaving the scene of an accident and D WI and then was arrested again in Atlantic Beach the next day for DWI and driving while license revoked. On Oct. 25 at 1:15 am. Officer Wallace observed a vehicle driving erratically on NC58. Officer Wallace followed the vehicle until it Fire/EMS Report During the month of October, PKS Fire & EMS responded to 28 calls, nine were EMS calls, 8 of which required Paramedic assistance. All 9 calls required transport to the hospital. There were 19 fire calls and the majority were activated alarms. The new ambulance has arrived and is being outfitted for service. Training for October covered the fields of hazardous material, driver training and emergency management training. During the Board of Commissioners meeting. Commissioner Hunter commented about the Lessons Learned documentation that was kept before, during and after the hurricane by EMS Director Matthias. Commissioner Hunter thought that the information should be shared with all the Commissioners so that “we can continue to improve.” In Memoriam October Ruth Kane Robert Kihlstrom Report pulled into a driveway. The female driver had her two small children and two adult males in the SUV with her. She registered a .20 Breath Alcohol Content (less than .08 is legal). She was arrested for DWI and eventually taken to the magistrate where she was released on a written promise to appear. The same evening. Officer Wallace and Sgt. Lemay were contacted about a domestic situation on the shoulder of the road where the male was beating the female. After looking along NC 58, they noticed a male and a female in an opened garage and the female was on the ground. Sgt. Lemay contacted Rescue for the female. Officer Wallace placed the male under arrest for being drunk and disruptive, but the magistrate in Beaufort later released the male for lack of probable cause. The female had been arrested by Officer Wallace 20 hours earlier for DWI. On Friday, Nov. 18, the annual holiday “Booze It & Loose It” campaign got underway. Law enforcement across the state will be conducting DWI checkpoints and saturation patrols in an attempt to keep the roads and highways safe for holiday travelers. Citizens are urged to make arrangements to have a designated driver or contact a taxi service before attending holiday festivities.
