A new member, Charlotte Hamilton, was welcomed into the club at its Feb. 8 meeting. America and the World Seminar Topic in PKS Bannen President Jan Corsello stepped up to present the program on herbs due to illness of the scheduled speaker. The March 8 meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m at Town Hall. The speaker will be Stephanie Mitchell, daughter of Clint and Millie Anderson of Walnut Circle. Stephanie has a masters in landscape design from N.C. State and her topic will be Natural by Design—Landscaping with Coastal Plants, using organic methods of planting. All PKS residents and guests are invited to learn with us. Men especially might find the landscaping topic of interest. Thought-provoking discussions, global in scope will be the order of the day during the fourth week in May at the Trinity Conference Center in Pine Knoll Shores. That week, from Sunday, May 21, through Friday, May 26, the center will provide the setting for the fourth in an annual series of Executive Seminars sponsored by the Program in the Humanities and Human Values in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Launched in 2003, the seminars are designed to explore America’s complex relationship with the rest of the world. The goal is to promote discussion of how foreigners have viewed America over the last two centuries, how America interacts with other nations in the modem world, and how foreign perceptions of America are evolving in an era of globalization and new international conflicts. Limited to 20 participants, the seminars have drawn ringing reviews from business, civic and social leaders who have attended in the past. PKS Mayor Joan Lamson, who participated in the 2005 sessions, found the program exceptional and well worth the time and effort for anyone interested in America’s post 9/11 political and cultural relationships with the rest of the world. The seminar will be led by Lloyd Kramer, Dean E. Smith Professor of History and Chair of the History Department at UNC-Chapel Hill. Kramer is the author or co-author of a number of books, including a study of nationalism in Europe and the United States and the classic text A History of the Modem World.. There are no lectures. The seminars consist entirely of discussions built around films and readings that reflect a variety of national perspectives and ideological points of view, both historical and contemporary. The seminar fee is $1,500, which includes all materials, lodging in a private room, meals, and use of the grounds and beaches of the center. Questions on participation should be directed to Edgar Marston at 919-843-9388 or by E-mail at edgar_marsten@unc.edu. Non profit organizations may apply for available scholarships. Mayor Lamson would be happy to discuss her experience at the seminar with anyone thinking of attending. 1% ir FRED’S Nobody knows beds like Fred’s!” ee the Area ft Quality Adjustid)le~B£^ Other Fine WdihtJ^ronf^ NGSDOWN MAtTfiSSSe?
