CALENDAR FOR AUGUST
What's New: During August Sirius, the "dog star," rises and sets with the sun. The
Ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot
and sultry weather that became known as the "dog days of summer". Retreat from the
"dog days heat" when you stop by the public library to enjoy the work of local artists
in the art gallery and to pursue your favorite authors.
New Books in the Large Print Collection: Recent additions to the popular easy to read
Large Print Book collection include "Get the Look" by James Grippando, "Carolina Isle"
by Jude Deveraux, "The Pale Horseman" by Bernard Cornwell,"SMALL steps" by Louis
Sacher and "A Cold Treachery" by Charles Todd.
Book Sale: The Friends of the Bogue Banks Library will hold their next semi-annual
Book Sale on Saturday, August 12 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Shepherd of the
Sea Lutheran Church, 201 East Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach. The Member Only Book
Sale will be held on Friday, August 11 at 7 p.m.
Featured Artists for August: Wrapping up a memorable, high-traffic summer for patrons
and visitors to the Art Gallery is a show by the exceptionally talented painter of the
Down East community and its lifestyle - Susan Mason. Her show includes magnificent
oil paintings of fishing people, their boats and equipment. Susan also paints still lifes
of local flowers and shells, intimate portraits, and exciting skyscapes. Featured in the
Showcases is a stunning collection of iridescent, enameled copper wall hanging creations
by Swansboro crafter, Debbie Pagliughi.
Reception for Artists: The Friends of the Library reception for August's artists will
beheld on Friday, August 4 from 3 to 4 pm. The reception is free and open to the public.
Refreshments will be served.
Activities for Children: Preschool Story times will be held each Thursday at 10 a.m.
"Cool Cats" on August 3, "Puppy Love" on August 10, "Hero Hound" (visit by police
dog), "Paws to the Rescue" (visit by Progressive Animal Welfare Society) and "Head
to Tale" on August 31. All programs with Ms. Brita. Call the library for information on
Toddler Time.
Trading Post for Paperback Books available and does not require a library card.Regular
hours are Monday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.The Bogue Banks Public
Library is a branch of the Carteret County Public Library in Beaufort and is affiliated
with the Craven-Pamlico-Carteret Regional Library.
