August Commissidnei's Meeting
By Yvette Bannen
One noteworthy item on the consent
agenda was for the purchase of a fire vehicle
(pumper) to replace a 1984vehicle. Instead of
going out for competitive bids, the Town has
"piggybacked" on a state contract and this
will be financed over a ten-year period.
Tax Collector Connie Shelton announced
that the tax bills would be going out at the
end of the month.
There was discussion about when the
Town would be taking over the water
department. A decision will be made in
April 2007of whether to continue the current
arrangement for another year or for the Town
to take over the responsibility.
Two large back-up generators will be
purchased for the water department to
keep water flowing during a storm. There
was discussion about putting fences around
the wells.
A doctoral student at ECU has proposed
a ground water monitoring project funded
by a grant. This is not a Town authorized
project, but the information gathered will be
of benefit to the T own. There was discussion
about the Roosevelt Shores subdivision
(former Royal Pavillion) and conditional
approval of the plat was given based on
planning board approval.
Ordinance violations, such as building
materials on road right of ways and
portapotties sitting on the roadway, are
being addressed.
During citizens' comments, Mark Wright
who represents an informal group of housing
subdivisions, including Beacons Reach and
Pine Knoll Townes, asked if a request for
a special service district for wastewater
treatment could be placed on the agenda.
The entities represent 40% of the Town's tax
base. The mayor replied that so far the scope
of the problem has not been defined.
Safety Rule
For the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, please make sure that any soil or marl from
your unpaved driveway is cleaned off the roads back onto the driveway. Loose marl
and soil on concrete or asphalt roads can cause dangerous falls. Loose gravel on roads
can be thrown by vehicle tires and cause damage or injury.
