Town Hall 247-4353 Logo Designer's Career Kept Him in Stitches By Bill White When directors and the staff of The Country Club of the Crystal Coast in Pine Knoll Shores encounter a need t that requires some professional advice, they usually needlookno farther than the ranks of the membership. The membership rolls are rich with individuals who together made their marks in a wide variety of fields before retiring or establishing a vacation home here. Such was the case earlier this year when it came to developing a new logo after the club's name was changed from Bogue Banks Country Club (BBCC) to the present Country Club of the Crystal Coast. It was felt that what amounted to a new beginning deserved a new image, so club leaders set Original Idea - Nick Policastro and his original artwork for the new Country Club of the Crystal Coast logo. about replacing the old BBCC logo of a golden sunburst rising above a blue ocean horizon. To give them a hand, they turned to Nick Policastro of PKS, a former director of the club and currently a memberofthecommittee overseeing construction of a new clubhouse. The choice was obvious. Policastro retired here six years ago after a more than 45-year career as a designer in the Schiffli embroidery industry. Nick wasborn into the trade. He grew up in Hudson County, New Jersey, then the heart of one of the greatest concentrations of Schiffli embroidery machines and plants in the world. Thousands of residents of the area worked in the industry, in both big plants and dozens of family- run operations utilizing one or maybe two Schiffli machines. Golfing Buddy, Doctors Prove Lifesavers at Country Club By Patti Swetz It was Wednesday, Sept. 20 and another perfect day for a game of tennis in Pine Knoll Shores. Norm Trommer headed for the country club tennis courts to join his buddies for a game of doubles. Meanwhile, three emergency room doctors from Carteret General were headed to the club for a round of golf. As the doctors, David Schroeder, Austin Burgess and Chuck Rocci, were about to tee off at the 10* hole they heard screaming coming from the nearby tennis courts. Norm Trommer, who had bent over to pick up a tennis ball, lay sprawled on the courts. His wife Kathy, playing tennis on an adjacent court, ran to his aid Hearing the commotion and seeing a man in trouble, the doctors rushed through the hedge between the 10'*’ tee and the tennis facility. Finding that Trommer was not breathing, they administered CPR until an ambulance arrived. Paramedic Nathan Alwalt used a defibrillator to get Norm breathing again. He was rushed to the hospital where an electro-cardiogram confirmed he had suffered a massive heart attack. Norm was subsequently transferred to Craven Medical Center and, on Sept. 25, underwent quintuple bypass surgery. Five days later he was released and sent home. He continues to make progress and has been seen walking around town and chatting with neighbors, who are amazed at his story. Had it not been for the quick action of the trio of doctors Norm would not have survived. He would like to thank all of his neighbors and friends who sent cards, left flowers and called about his recovery. A week after the Trommer incident, another gorgeous day in PKS prompted Johnny Terrell and Bill Schmid to go play a round of golf. They were having a successful round until the 13* hole, where (Golfing Buddy) Continued on Page 4 Standard Pre-Sort Permit #35 Atlantic Beach, NC 28512 Deadline for Dec. issue is Monday, Nov. 20th.
