In springtime, an extra collection day is added in the montlis of March, April, and May. The extra effort is designed to take care of the much heavier volume of debris produced at this time of year as homeowners tackle the task of picking up the litter resulting from nature's winter cleansing of those components of growing things no longer serving a useful purpose. In order to effectively deal with the heavier volume, even with added time, the town's waste removal contractor. Waste Industries, provides guidelines for the proper preparation of yard waste. When homeowners ignore these guidelines, as is often the case, it is virtually impossible for the job to be completed. Waste removal crews are there to "remove" the waste. They are not equipped to rake up loose piles of twigs, leaves and grass and weed clippings, or to wrestle with 10-foot chunks of tree limbs and such. Gathering the little things up and packaging them, and reducing large items to a size that can be handled and then bundling them together, is the job of the homeowner. Not following the guidelines can become a waste of and a drain on the time of all concerned. Remember, if the preparation guidelines are not followed the debris will not be picked up. It then becomes the responsibility of the homeowner.to remove the debris, an added burden that need not be dealt with if the job is done properly from the start. The guidelines dealing with yard waste are reprinted here, and copies may also be obtained at town hall. There will be two yard waste pickups this month, on the second Thursday (May 10) and the last Thursday (May 31). Let's make good use of them. In June the pickups will return to the once a month schedule. Guidelines for Yard Waste Collection Yard Waste is collected on the last Thursday of each month. Yard waste is to be placed on the right of way not more than 72 hours prior to the collection date. Limbs, debris, leaves, straw, shrubbery and bush clippings, grass and weed trimmings mustbe bagged, boxed or placed in approved containers. Limbs, shrubbery and other materials shall not be longer than four feet and must betiedinbundlesnotlargerthanlSinchesin diameter and not exceed 50 lbs. in weight.
