Page 2 The Shoreline October 2007 September Commissioners Meeting By Yvette Bannen Police Report During August, there were 96 calls for service including four accidents, seven to assist other agencies, 12 assist Fire/EMS, 16 town ordinance violations, 43 welfare checks, four alarms and three unlocked doors. Eighty-three citations were issued involving 100 charges, one for driving while impaired, 23 speeding, seven driving with a suspended license, 22 seatbelt violations, five drug violations, six alcohol violations and 36 other. Nineteen warning tickets were issued. There were 69 residence checks and 280 business checks. Emergency Services During August, there were 20 EMS calls: 10 patients were transported and nine of them required paramedic assistance. There were 19 fire calls: two activated alarms, six service calls, one accident, two structure fires and eight mutual aid. DuringTropicalStorm Gabrielle, Cherry Point had a large fire and one fire truck and personnel were dispatched. Ten volunteers covered the department during that time. If you are a registered voter but have moved since the last election, you must notify the elections board of your change of address in writing by Oct. 12. You may register at the board of elections office at 1510 Live Oak Street in Beaufort. You may also register by mail. For additional information contact the board of elections at 728-8460. If you plan to vote by absentee ballot, you must request an absentee ballot in writing and it must be received at the elections office by 5 p.m. Oct. 30. Absentee voting begins Oct. 5 and ends at 5 p.m. Nov. 5. One-stop voting will be held at the board of elections office beginning Oct. 18 and ending Nov. 3. The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 3, the Saturday before the election. Polls will be open Nov. 6 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Pine Knoll Shores polling place is in town hall. At the morning work session, Judy Hill from the East Carolina Council of Government gave a presentation on stormwater. A public hearing on coastal stormwater rule changes was held in Morehead City on Sept. 25. Also discussed at the morning work session was an update on the Army Corps of Engineers dredging the Intracoastal Waterway. As part of the least cost of disposal requirement, PKS might get some "free" sand. However, questions were raised about where pipes would be laid in order to get the sand from the sound to the beach, costs to the town and quality of the sand among other things. Mayor Joan Lamson said that more information is needed. Tax bills have been mailed. Chris Jones, director of inspections, noted that he participated in a tour of the canal to inspect bulkheads and that letters will be sent out regarding violations. Following a recommendation from the planning board, there was a call for a During the summer, the Pine Knoll Shores Recreation Advisory Committee conducted a recreation interest survey within the community, encouraging all permanent and part-time residents and non-resident property owners to participate. The survey was broad, with questions designed to gather data about all recreational activities. It also provided respondents with an opportunity to express their preferences, interests, and concerns. The survey was included in the June issue of The Shoreline with instructions public hearing October 9 on an ordinance clarifying definitions relating to single family dwellings and also restricting time shares. Recommendations for appointments to the planning board were made and Doug Browne, Clark Edwards, Roger Middlesteadt and Wayne Deane were approved for two-year terms. Doug Browne will serve as chairman. Recommendations for the community appearance Commission were made and Rena Kihlstrom and Harold Green were approved as alternate members for three-year terms. A motion to apply to the N.C. Department of Transportation for a planning grant for a pedestrian walkway was approved. The grant would be for $20,000 with a town match of $4,000. During the citizens' comments, Paul Pyllko representing Pine Knoll Association presented a petition with more than 250 signatures to the mayor regarding the location of a public access at Ocean Park. to return it to town hall or Bogue Banks Public Library by Aug. 3. The committee thanks town employees and library personnel for their help in collecting and securing the surveys. There was an overwhelming response, with 487 surveys being returned! The committee is encouraged by the response and continues to work to carefully record data and document all of the many comments and concerns from our citizens.
