Seek Pedestrian Master Plan
Grant; Advisory Group Formed

Sporting proboscis props of which any reindeer would be proud, Clark Edwards,
Ted Goetzinger and Vic Filan belt out a rousing rendition of Rudolph the Red Nosed
Reindeer at the women's club Christmas luncheon, proving once again that husbands
are good for something. The group's harmony, although a bit nasal, brought down

Unseasonable Warmth Doesn't
Dilute Holiday Season Spirits
By Bill White
As December dawned, it definitely was
notbeginning to feel
a lot like Christmas.
The weather was
downright balmy,
and stayed that way
for a good part of the
month, with a brief
cold snap or two
thrown in.
But Pine Knoll
Shores residents
were not about to
let the unseasonable
weather deter them
from getting into the
holiday spirit. They
kicked the season
into high gear on
the very first day
of the month with

TownManager Brian Kramer has formed
a committee of citizens representing
various interests in the community
to serve in an advisory capacity on
development and implementation of a
master plan for pedestrian facilities in
Pine Knoll Shores.
The move comes in anticipation of
possible approval by the North Carolina
Department of Transportation (DOT)
of the town's application for a grant to
finance development of such a master
plan. The application involves a total of
$24,000, with $19,200 to come from the
state and the town providing $4,800 in
matching funds. Kramer said word should
come in May as to whether the grant
application has been approved.
In the application the town stresses
the fact that its primary consideration
is to provide a means for citizens and
visitors to safely and easily walk and
jog from the community's eastern
boundary to its western boundary and
for pedestrians to have easy and safe
access to such installations as the North
Carolina Aquarium, Bogue Banks Library
and beach accesses. It points out that a
principal goal of the master plan would
be to provide for appropriate facilities for
pedestrians along NC Highway 58 (Salter
Path Road). The highway bisects the
community and is the only direct means
of traversing the town from one end to the
other and reaching all of the important
destinations along the way.
The town has made application for a
pedestrian planning grant several times
in the past without success. Mayor
Joan Lamson said town officials feel
the likelihood of approval is greater
