Around Town By Bob Ruggiero Colleen Marshall recently visited her parents Grace and Bob Marshall in PKS. Colleen is a graduate of Plymouth State College in New Hampshire. During her senior year she became interested in writing, and subsequently became the feature editor of the Clock, the campus newspaper. Having decided that she was interested in writing as a career, she changed her major to English with a writing option. Colleen graduated in 1997 and pursued her love of writing with a position at the Meredith News in New St * >{• St >fr Recent knee replacement surgery didn't stop Bill Hotham of Oakleaf Drive from joining a group of neighbors on a scheduled trip to Italy late in September, although it did restrict him a bit at the beginning. After landing in Rome, Bill used a portable wheelchair for a time while sightseeing in the Eternal City, which made negotiating theSpanishStepsout of the question. But he and his traveling companions, his wife Mary Anne and neighbors Barbara Gaunt and Sue Walsh, pretty much visited everything else and were particularly impressed by St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Then their escorted bus tour headed south to Naples, Capri and Pompei, with bill folding up Sue Walsh, Barbara Gaunt and the Hothams at Lake Maggiore Hampshire. She was a general assignment reporter and stayed at the paper for two and a half years. Honing her writing skills, she left New Hampshire for Hawaii and the West Hawaii Daily. After year and a half, homesickness took over and she took a position with Mainly Media as managing editor of the three weekly paper, the Gazetteer, Sentry and Meander covering all of South Maine. She has been at the editor position for one and a half years. How can your leave Hawaii for Maine? Oh well, youth must be served! ♦ Sf St the wheelchair and doing very well with a cane for the rest of the trip. In perfect weather they headed back north for stops in Padua, Verona, Venice and Florence, another of their particular favorites Of course the trip also included the scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast and a stop in Pisa to try to straighten out that tilting tower. After two weeks of touring Italy from coast to coast they relaxed on the shores of Lake Maggiore before heading for Milan and the flight home. Once back in the states. Bill, with no other junkets scheduled in the near future, had his other knee replaced. According to his wife he is now back riding his bike and recuperating nicely. in Tennessee and Fort Abraham Lincoln National Park in South Dakota, the final command of Colonel George Custer prior to his assignment to Montana and his death at Little Big Horn. Their travels took them to Yellowstone in Wyoming, Yosemite in California, the Everglades in Florida, the Blue Ridge Mountains, Skyline Drive, and the Smokies. Warren cataloged their trips and as of now his record contains 35 pages. While staying at the various RV parks they encountered wild mustangs, quarter horses, deer, moose and buffalo roaming free amongst the parked vehicles. If any reader is thinking of a similar journey, their RV averages seven miles per gallon of gasoline. For the adventurous among us their journey stirs visions of "on the road again". Happy motoring to all! >{■ Sfr Sf- Sf. Sf World travelers Bill and Susan Christman recently returned from a two-week excursion to Germany. Their first week was spent in a condo in the Eifel National Park across the border from Belgium. As both are retired history teachers, they had a great interest in the Bastogne, Malmedy and the Ardennes Forest area as all were involved in battles during World War II. They could visualize the problems that the Allied airplanes had providing air support for the ground troops as the area was shrouded in a heavy fog during their visit much the same as occurred during the famous Battle of the Bulge. After visiting the battlefields they proceeded on to Cologne and were very impressed by the famous Cathedral. In Aachen they attended a service at the cathedral where Charlemagne had been crowned king in 800AD. The pair spent the second week of their vacation in Hinterzartene that is adjacent to the Swiss border. They had to leave this cross-country area and head to Zurich to avoid getting snowed in, but the early departure allowed extra time visiting in Zurich prior to. flying home to Pine Knoll Shores. Twins Joyce Weyers and Jeanette Neurdorff and husband Warren visited with sister Joan Lamson during their journey heading south to Florida for the winter months. This trio has logged visits to all the contiguous 48 states and have toured each state for a minimum of one week. Their decision to travel big time was made in 1995 after sister Joyce retired from the Worker's Compensation Board after 29 years.Jeanetteworked in Montgomery, Alabama as a vault teller, and the man of the group, Warren, retired from the Federal Aviation Agency after 32 years. Their home away from home is a 36-foot RV mobile home that has taken the adventurous trio to every state in the nation. They have visited to such diverse locations as Arcadia National Park in Maine,.
