Police Chief Culpepper reported that there was a good response to the random survey about services sent out by the police department. Emergency Services During January there were 15 calls, five of which were EMS calls. There were two activated alarms, four mutual aid calls and four public service assistance calls. Fire/EMS personnel logged 225 training hours during January. The west end siren has been set up and now work is being done to program all three sirens to be set off from the public safety building. When this is operational there will be a public service campaign to educate the public on siren notification. Two employees have resigned so there is a need for volunteers for both fire and EMS. Advertisement of tax liens was approved on the consent agenda. There will be a DOT meeting in Raleigh and it appears that widening of the canal will happen with the new bridge on Mimosa Blvd. It was discovered that utilities can't be on the new bridge so accommodations will have to be made for the water line. Work continues on checking water meters. So far, 10 to 15 have been found that are unreadable. Takeover of the water company will probably take place in May and accurate readings are important. There will be a public hearing at the March BOC meeting regarding the revision and recodification of town ordinances. The nomination of Barbara Lemons to fill a vacancy on the planning board was approved. The planning board will discuss a windmill ordinance. Deliberation continues on the single family ordinance. JoAnn Shallcross was reappointed chair of the recreational advisory committee. Jodi Isakson was reappointed for a three- year term and Jill Cross was appointed to fill a three-year term. The committee is working to facilitate some of the requests on the recreational survey. On February 28 the town manager will hold the first meeting of the sidewalk com mittee. Wastewater: There was a long and heated debate about wastewater and the bottom line is that the homeowners' associations deserve an answer from the town, one way or another. The town manager recommended bringing in experts so that everyone can understand the problem and then make a decision. There was a reminder that BOC work sessions now start at 9:30 a.m. It was armounced that PKS received a Tree City designation for the eighth year in a row and a ceremony will be held on Arbor Day, March 21.
