The Tree City USA program is sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Four standards must be in place to receive this recognition: the community must have a tree board, an ordinance covering tree care, a comprehensive community forestry program and an annual Arbor Day observance. The Community Appearance Commission on March 19 conducted an Arbor Day celebration. Carteret County Rangers John Dunn and Donald Meadows, representing the N.C. Division of Forestry, congratulated the town on achieving this honor and presented the town with a Tree City USA flag and other material. Mayor Joan Lamson presented an official resolution designating March 19 as Arbor Day in PKS. The celebration was concluded after several members of the CAC offered information regarding the value of trees to the community.
