Page 10 The Shoreline June 2008 Maritime Museum Spaces Available in Summer Science School Classes Senator Sam Coming to Morehead City Are you wondering how to keep the kids busy this summer? The North Carolina Maritime Museum's Summer Science School is the perfect combination of fun and learning, and the best part is that the learning is outdoors. Classes with hands-on activities and field trips make each class a unique educational experience. Seashore Life investigates coastal marine life with an emphasis on adaptations and food chains of the tidal flats, salt marshes and sounds on local islands. Youngsters entering the first grade can explore Seashore Life in a three-hour class from 9 am to noon June 11, June 30, July 11 and Aug. 11. The fee for each class is $25. Seashore Life II for entering second and third graders is a seven-hour class over a two-day period. Offered June 12-13 and August 12-13. The cost for either class is $65. Seashore Life III for entering fifth and sixth graders investigates the wildlife and history of the barrier islands of Cape Lookout National Seashore. This three-day class is offered June 23-25 and also July 1-3. The cost for either class is $95. Pirates will explore the life of pirates at work, play and in battle through stores and special hands-on activities designed for entering second and third graders. Class is June 26-27 from 9 a.m. -11:30 a.m. The cost for this class is $50. Museum hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Admission is free. By Phillis A one-man play about North Carolina s esteemed Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr., perhaps best known as the colorful chairman of the Watergate Hearings, is coming to the History Place in Morehead City on Friday and Saturday June 13-14 at 8 p.m. and Sunday June 15 at 2 p.m. Senator Sam, by North Carolina playwright Steve Bouser, is set in Senator Ervin's backyard on August 8,1974, the day President Richard Nixon announced his resignation. In the play. Senator Ervin Senator Sam Ervin spends the evening reminiscing about his roots in N.C., his military service in WWI, and the years spent as a circuit-riding judge. He reviews his Senate struggles for civil liberties against Senator Joe McCarthy and for states' rights against Attorney General Robert Kennedy. Throughout the play. Senator Ervin's North Carolina Heritage is exemplified by his wit, wisdom and colorful "stowries," as he called them. Those stories and his quotes from Shakespeare and the Bible endeared him to the whole nation as just an old country lawyer ..." with a Harvard Makuck law degree. Well-known performer Paul White plays Senator Sam. Mr. White has produced and/or acted in thirteen productions in New Bern over the last four years, including Senator Sam in 2006 and Clarence Darrow in 2005. Patsy White directs her husband, and Home Inventory Specialists of New Bern sponsors the show. Proceeds benefit The Carteret County Historical Society. The 90-minute production is in two acts with a short intermission. Seating will be at round tables with eight seats per table.
