Electrical Consumption Dips For Second Month
By Bill White
The campaign to help the nation achieve
energy independence by reducing
electric consumption
in Pine Knoll Shores
continues to bear
fruit. For the second
month in a row
electrical usage in
the community in
September showed a
decrease from usage
in the corresponding
period last year.
While the
campaign is based on
consumption by the
month and features
seasonal tips for that
particular period of
the year, usage is now being reported on a
kilowatt hour per day basis because billing
cycles do not
exactly dovetail
with the days of
the month. Some
cycles cover fewer
than the actual
number of days
in a given month,
some a greater
number of
days. Reporting
kilowatt usage
by the day
gives a precise
picture of how
daily usage this
year compares ^
Tip of the Month
Holiday cooking. If you have a lot of
holiday cooking planned, your energy
use can really add up. Make sure your
pan covers the coil of your electric
range. If you can see coil peeping out
from the sides of your pan, you are
losing energy and you need to use
the smaller burner. Cover pans while
cooking to preventheatloss. Just before
your food is cooked completely, turn
off the oven or burner and allow the
heat in the pot or pan to continue the
cooking process for you.
to daily usage last year during a given
period.
During the September period last year
the average kilowatt hour per day usage in
PKS was 153,067. This past September the
average per day was 144,960, a decrease
of 8,107 kilowatt hours and a percentage
reduction of 5.30. This is on top of a 7.47
percent reduction in average kilowatt
hours per day achieved in August, the

Honored at Dinner;
Monument Dedicated
By Bill White
Kilroy was there. And so were 47 World
War II veterans and many of their spouses
as citizens of Pine Knoll Shores gathered
at the Country Club of the Crystal Coast
October 24 for a dinner to recognize the
contributions of those among them who
served in the nation's armed forces and
helped preserve freedom more than six
decades ago during the war that engulfed
the world.
Earlier in the day the group came
together on a rise of land outside of town
hall and, in a brief, moving ceremony,
dedicated a monument to all those Pine
Knoll Shores residents, past and present,
who have served in all branches of the
military and were prepared, during times
of war and times of peace, to go forth and
fight for the cause of liberty and justice.
Dedication of the Military Veterans
Memorial was the culmination of an
effort launched more than six months
ago by a group of citizens. They felt that
a significant tribute to their friends and
neighbors who had served the nation
during the cataclysm of World War II was
long overdue, especially since the passage
of time was thinning the ranks of World
War II veterans at a quickening pace.
Moreover, it was felt that these same
residents deserved a heartfelt thank you
for their contributions to the community
