Veterans
Walter "Jake" Rife (right), who originated the campaign for a veterans memorial, unveils the
monument outside town hall with an assist from Shoreline Editor Bill White, an early supporter
of the proposal.
The rallying cry "Kilroy Was Here" was
scrawled everywhere during World War II
and showed up prominently on the cake at the
World War II veterans dinner. The cake was
decorated with a 48 Star Flag, the number of
United States in the World War II era.
