The state has contributed its portion of $119,550; the town has paid $28,692 in cash and is providing $11,158 of in-kind services to clear the area. The project has been scaled back from the original Soundside Park plan that was more expensive and extravagant. By Barbara Former Mayor Ken Haller in his history of Pine Knoll Shores from 1973- 1985 says, "The town occupies one of the finest sections of Bogue Banks. The area is comprised of 2,000 acres owned by the Theodore Roosevelt family. The 500 acres devoted to home sites occupy the choicest property on BOgue Banks." Upon her death Alice Green Hoffman willed this land to her niece Eleanor, wife of Theodore Roosevelt Jr., and their four children Grace, Theodore III, Cornelius and Quentin. Just how this property came to belong to Alice Hoffman in the first place is a fascinating story ultimately leading to the beautiful, carefully planned and maintained town we enjoy today. Who was Alice Green Hoffman and what was her impact on the development of the Town of Pine Knoll Shores? "Alice the Queen" is actually what Alice Green Hoffman's sisters called her as they were growing up. Other similar titles such as "Alice, The Queen of Bogue Banks"have appeared in articles written about her in local publications and mentioned in public speaking engagements. To explain her impact on life in Pine Knoll Shores as we know it today, it is necessary to use these sources of information as well as some first-hand accounts by Carteret County residents who knew her. Additional facts come from the East Carolina Manuscript Collection, Jojmer Library at East Carolina University,' Queen or not, there is no doubt that she reigned supreme here in her Bogue Banks domain from 1918 until her death in 1953. Alice Green was born in 1862 into a prominent, wealthy New York City family. She was the eldest of three sisters and received a well rounded education, definitely above the norm for the time period. She attended Miss Porter's School for Girls, a New England boarding school favored by the rich and famous to this day.
