By Barbara
Former Mayor Ken Haller in his
history of Pine Knoll Shores from 1973-
1985 says, "The town occupies one of
the finest sections of Bogue Banks. The
area is comprised of 2,000 acres owned
by the Theodore Roosevelt family. The
500 acres devoted to home sites occupy
the choicest property on BOgue Banks."
Upon her death Alice Green Hoffman
willed this land to her niece Eleanor, wife
of Theodore Roosevelt Jr., and their four
children Grace, Theodore III, Cornelius
and Quentin.
Just how this property came to belong
to Alice Hoffman in the first place is
a fascinating story ultimately leading
to the beautiful, carefully planned and
maintained town we enjoy today. Who
was Alice Green Hoffman and what was
her impact on the development of the
Town of Pine Knoll Shores?
"Alice the Queen" is actually what
Alice Green Hoffman's sisters called
her as they were growing up. Other
similar titles such as "Alice, The Queen
of Bogue Banks"have appeared in articles
written about her in local publications
and mentioned in public speaking
engagements.
To explain her impact on life in Pine
Knoll Shores as we know it today, it
is necessary to use these sources of
information as well as some first-hand
accounts by Carteret County residents
who knew her. Additional facts come
from the East Carolina Manuscript
Collection, Jojmer Library at East Carolina
University,' Queen or not, there is no
doubt that she reigned supreme here in
her Bogue Banks domain from 1918 until
her death in 1953.
Alice Green was born in 1862 into a
prominent, wealthy New York City
family. She was the eldest of three sisters
and received a well rounded education,
definitely above the norm for the time
period. She attended Miss Porter's
School for Girls, a New England boarding
school favored by the rich and famous to
this day. She could speak a number of
languages fluently, was an accomplished
pianist, loved opera, drama and literature,
