Kayak Race. "Hope for the Warriors"
second annual kayak race is slated to get
underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June
13, in Gamer Park on Oakleaf Drive in
PKS. Interested kayakers can obtain a
registration form from either the library
or town hall. Everyone is welcome to
join the festivities. There will be a fun
paddle race, face painting, entertainment
and, of course, the race itself. Lunch will
also be available at a cost of $5. (Kayak
racers will be provided a complementary
lunch.) Donations for this worthy cause
are welcome at town hall.
Clean Beaches Week. The week
of July 1-7, 2009, is National Clean
Beaches Week. At its April meeting the
PKS Board of Commissioners passed
a proclamation recognizing this week
and urged citizen support to help keep
the beaches clean, not only during this
week but throughout the year. The
PKS Recreation Advisory Committee
(RAC) also encourages all citizens to
participate in Clean Beaches Week by
donning their rubber gloves, grabbing
a plastic bag, and heading for the beach
to collect and dispose of debris found
there. Members of RAC maintain that
this week is the "Earth Day" for the coast,
and participation during this designated
week will demonstrate another way to
"Keep America Beautiful."
Habitat for Humanity. The Employees
of Sound Bank of Morehead City
recently gave-up a Saturday to help
build a Habitat for Humanity home
on Hibbs Road in Newport. This
effort was a repeat performance by
the employees and officers of Sound
Bank that has been recognized for its
support and involvement throughout the
community. Habitat for Humanity elicits
the involvement of other volunteers. If
your business, church, or a group of
neighbors and friends are interested
in helping out, a call to the Habitat for
Humanity office (223-2111) is all that
is required. Remember, Crystal Coast
Habitat for Humanity is not a "hand
out." It is a "hand in" for local families
who qualify since the future homeowners
work along with the volunteers.
Original Quilt Designs on Display.
Award winning quilt designer Robin
Koehler's "Threadscapes" will be on
display at the Wood Artist Gallery in
Salter Path throughout the summer.
Ms. Koehler, a PKS resident, owns
and operates a quilt design and textile
art business. Nestlings by Robin. She
has received a number of awards in
recognition of her unique approach to
design. Each Monday, beginning on May
25, Ms. Koehler will be available at the
Wood Artist Gallery to discuss the art
of textiles. She can be reached at robin@
nestlingsbyrobin.com.
Parade. The annual July 4th Parade will
begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, at Garner
Park. All are welcome. Decorate your
bike, wagon, strollers etc. and come and
have fun. Lemonade and watermelon
served afterwards.
Summer Pet Alert. The summer brings
additional people and their pets to PKS. It
seems like an appropriate time to remind
pet owners that they are responsible for
the actions of their pets. Keep a plastic
bag handy when walking your pet,
because town ordinances require owners
to pick-up and appropriately dispose of
pet waste.
