We have been awarded a $50,000 grant to dredge the canal in Pine Knoll Shores. The shallow areas will be identified and dredged to make the canal a bit safer for our boaters. As of the time of this writing, no decisions have been made regarding timing. Public input meeting for the Pedestrian (aka Sidewalk) Master Plan. There is another article in this issue of The Shoreline that provides detail on the status of this planning effort. Please take a look at it and note that there will be a public input meeting on June Emergency Services By Yvette Bannen During April, there were 32 calls in PKS for emergency services. EMS had 15 calls; 10 patients were transported and 8 required paramedic assistance. There were 6 in-district fire calls: 4 were service calls and 2 were activated alarms. There were 11 mutual aid calls of which •2 were structure fires, 1 EMS assist and 8 activated alarms. F ire/EMS per sormel logged 173 training hours during April and will continue their training into May for ongoing state certification courses. Amerisuites (now Hampton Inn & Police Report By Yvette Bannen Suites) was the focus of fire prevention inspections because they failed to obtain permits for renovation work, and several violations were noted. It was noted in the incident response report that several calls for activated alarms were made to the same address in Atlantic Beach, and Commissioner Larson asked if We could charge for multiple calls to the same address. The response was that we could, but that it would be bad public relations. The Atlantic Beach fire marshal is trying to resolve the problem. April was a busy month for the PKS police, with 109 calls for service including 15 to assist other agencies, 7 assist fire/ EMS, 5 domestic calls, 6 motorists assists, 5 town ordinance violations, 30 well-being checks, 7 alarms and 3 unlocked doors. During April, there were two different gun reports. There were 20 citations involving 25 charges issued, including: 2 driving while impaired, 10 speeding, 1 driving while suspended, 1 seat belt violation, 4 drug violations, 1 alcohol violation and 6 others. Some 55 warning tickets were issued. It is speculated that the increase in activity was due to the warmer weather bringing more visitors. In addition there were 87 residence checks and 224business checks. The warm weather also brought the sighting of a nude male at a beach access. ' By the time the police were called from home, the person was not found. The PKS police department asks that you take your cell phone with you to the beach so that such incidents can be reported immediately. 23> begjiming at 6:00 p.m. at town hall. Gallery Hop in Salter Path By Phyllis Makuck During the month of Jime, three art galleries in Salter Path are having wine and cheese open houses every Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. St. Francis by the Sea Gallery, Nice Figures Wood Artists' Gallery, and Leni Newell's Gallery would like to make "gallery hopping" a regular Bogue Banks' social event. Balloons will mark the entrance to each venue. For those approaching Salter Path from Pine Knoll Shores, the first gallery, at mile marker 10.5 on the right side of Salter Path Road, will be St. Francis by the Sea Episcopal Church. It features a different artist each month and in June will have the paintings of Jim Storholt, who lives in Pine Knoll Shores. Jim works in acrylic. One of his paintings was selected for the Morehead City Seafood Festival Poster in 2005 and another will be this year's poster. About one mile west of St. Francis by the Sea on the same side of the road is the Wood Artists' Gallery. Proprietors Paula Labelle and Sharon Barrett work with a variety of amazing exotic woods. They produce unique and functional works of art. Next door is Leni Newell's Gallery, featuring her own paintings, sophisticated abstract collage, and craft items such as painted silk scarves and batik wall hangings. Leni's gallery also exhibits pottery by two accomplished potters—Nancy Schecter and Vicki Grant. The "Gallery Hop in Salter Path" is a come- as-you-are event—a perfect way to end a day at the beach or begin an evening out.
