Page 10 The Shoreline j August'2()09 i Meet Your Neighbors The Storholts By Jacquie Pipkin Just over six years ago, Jim and Kathe Storholt decided to leave their careers of almost 20 years and the only home in Greensboro, North Carolina, Walter, their son, had ever known and relocate to Carteret County. Kathe worked in human resources at Gilbarco in Greensboro and Jim was working in sales for Wilson Pest Control in Winston Salem. Both have been coming to the Crystal Coast for the past 25 years and were bunung a ridge in the highway between GSO and their condo at Sea Spray in Atlantic Beach. After several house hunting trips they found their home on Pine Knoll Circle and settled quickly into beach life. - The move to PKS allowed the family to adopt a rescue dog, so Miimie, a Rat Terrier mix, joined the Storholt family in their new life at the beach. Walter attended Croatan High School where he was president of the BETA Club, ran cross country and worked for WTKF part time. Jim and Kathe praise the teachers and administration at CHS for Walter's adjustment to his new school and his academic achievement. Walter graduated this year from University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill from the school of journalism with a degree in electronic broadcasting. After a couple of other employment ventures, Jim and Kathe found themselves in the similar careers they enjoyed in Greensboro. Jim works for Rid-A-Pest and Kathe is the Human Resource Manager for North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries. Since relocating to PKS, Jim has focused his considerable artistic talents on capturing the essence of Carteret County, its people and its beauty. You may recognize Jim as the 2009 NC Seafood Festival poster artist. This is the second time Jim has received this honor. His original paintings for the 2005 and 2009 festival, along with the other 21 original Seafood Festival paintings, are on permanent display at the Morehead City Courthouse. While working full time, Jim manages to include time for his painting through discipline, careful scheduling and encouragement from Kathe. Jim credits Kathe with keeping his art work organized as well as maintaining their web site. Kathe creates the note cards the couple sells from their booth during the annual Seafood Festival. Some of Jim's workis on display at Arts & Things Gallery on Evans Street in Morehead City. Jim is currently a board member of the Arts Coimcil of Carteret County and is a participant of the Adopt an Artist Program where local business and restaurants display the works of local artists on a rotating basis. On weekends the Storholts enjoy the beach, boating with friends, attending church at First Presbyterian in Morehead City, walking Minnie and visiting with family. Jim and Kathe met while working part time at a Greek restaurant in Greensboro. Kathe was attending Greensboro College and Jim was a student at Guilford Technical Institute. What began as a friendship between two young people has blossomed into a 26 year marriage. If you would like to meet Kathe and Jim and see this talented artist's work, stop by their booth at the NC Seafood Festival in Morehead City, October 2-4, 2009.
