September 2009 Around Town By Bob Ruggiero -f Pictured: Author J. Douglas McCullough and hostessed Grace Meyers The Novel Ideas Book Club met at local resident Grace Meyers' home on July 22. The book selection was The Sea of Greed by J. Douglas McCullough of Atlantic Beach. The author attended the discussion groups' meeting with his wife Lucci. He shared his insights and experiences in writing the true story of America's biggest drug raid. The sequence of events that led to an investigation started on July 7,1982, in Beaufort Inlet, N.C. The investigation ultimately led to the invasion of Panama and the overthrow of President Manuel Noriega of Panama. The club members in attendance were Jane Ashland, Barbara Bagby, Pat Filan, Judy Henry, Kay Howe, Carol McVitty and special guest Barbara Milhaven. >{■ H- >{■ Reid Strader of Arborvitae Drive was accepted as a member of the Fort Macon Sail and Power Squadron at the Morehead City Country Club on Monday, August. 17. Commander "JB" Bagby of McGinnis Point administered the pledge and presented him with a certificate of recognition. John D. Marriott HI, the 19 year-old grandson of John and Ellen Marriott, residents of Pine Knoll Shores, was one of 12 duplicate bridge players representing the United States in &e World Youth Championship games held in Istanbul, Turkey, in August. John lives in Cary, NC, and is a sophomore at North Carolina State University. He and his bridge partner, Alex Hudson of Raleigh, began playing bridge about three years ago after family members introduced them to the game. They often play bridge online in their dorm room, teaming up to take on players from all over the world. They qualified for the overseas tournament after a good showing in an online tournament. John and Alex have played for the past two years at sectional tournaments held each October in Morehead City. In July 2008, John was one of the participants in the first Youth North American Bridge Championship for players under the age of 20. John and Alex's team tied for second place. John, who has watched his dad play bridge for years and even accompanied him to several tournaments, says, "I don't think I would ever have started playing if my dad didn't play." >{• X- >f- Addy Quinn, six-year-old daughter of Paul and Amy Quinn, is following the athletic ability set by her parents and brother, all of whom have excelled in Beach Run activities this year. Addy finished third in a one-mile race with a time of 10:46. Lindsay Westmoreland, daughter of George and Gail Westmoreland of Yaupon Road, was invited to sing the national anthem for the Kinston Indians minor league baseball team. Lindsay has taken voice from Laurence Stith for the last five years. She will be in the eighth grade at Gramercy Christian School. X- Jearme Marie Sasso and Jonathan Lee Shapiro exchanged wedding vows on July 15, 2009, on the beach at Hammer Park, Pine Knoll Shores. The Rev. Everett Thomas, Ph.D. officiated the 6 p.m. double-ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Jerry and Maryan Sasso of Toms River, New Jersey. TTie groom is the son of David and Mary Ann Shapiro of Pine Knoll Shores. The couple is residing in Effort, Pennsylvania.
