September.2009- The Shoteline Page. Meet Your Shoreline Staff By Jacquie Pipkin Over the past year. The Shoreline has had some staff and position changes. We thought this might be a good time to introduce you to staff members, starting with the new Managing Editor, Charlie McBriarty, and the versatile Production Editor, Carolyn Rife. Charles McBriarty, better known as Charlie, is The Shoreline's new managing editor. Bill White, Editor Emeritus and The Shoreline's first managing editor, recently re-located to Charlotte, N.C., to be closer to his family. Charlie and his wife, Eileen, have resided in Pine Knoll Shores since July 2002. The McBriartys met at Indiana University while both were in graduate school and in 1963 were married in Bloomington. During their professional careers, Eileen was a mental health therapist and Charlie a university administrator. They have two sons and two daughters and three grandchildren. Charlie began his involvement with The Shoreline in 2006 as a contributing reporter with no previous writing experience. Since, Charliehas discovered both the joys and challenges of writing for the paper. Throughout his tenure, Charlie enjoyed spending time talking with Bill White about Bill's experiences For many, one of the first questions to arise about the Pine Knoll Shores Pedestrian Master Plan is "How much is it going to cost?" During the July 31 meeting of the Pedestrian Master Plan Steering Committee, Pine Knoll Shores Public Services Director, Ernie Rudolph, reported on the cost per linear foot of walkways in other towns that have successfully implemented a pedestrian walkway plan. In responding to questions asked at the public open house regarding the cost of walkways, Mr. Rudolph emphasized the many variables going into a cost projection such as design, materials (concrete, asphalt, timber) and site prep. in the newspaper business. Charlie learned a great deal from Bill and eventually became co-managing editor. When Bill moved to Charlotte, Charlie graciously accepted the responsibilities of managing editor. The Shoreline staff is grateful that he did and pledges to make Charlie's experience as managing editor more a joy than a challenge. In addition to doing everything that no one else is available to do, Charlie assumes primary responsibility for maintaining contact with the paper's New Bern publisher, reviewing submissions received, recruiting volunteers and maintaining regular communication with the staff. He also continues to contribute articles. Carolyn Rife, production editor, has lived in Pine Knoll Shores with her husband, Jake, since 1999. After actually moving into their home on Oakleaf Dr., their daughter who lives in Detroit, surprised Jake with the gift of a puppy, Sammy, who is also the mascot of The Shoreline. The Rifes have been married for 31 years. They have three daughters, a son, five grandchildren and two granddogs. The Rifes lived in Saudi Arabia for three years and Bangkok, Thailand, for nine Alesia Sanderson from Emerald Isle Parks and Recreation and Marc Shulze from Atlantic Beach Public Works joined the meeting to share their experiences in planning, funding, building and maintaining walkways. They also answered questions about items such as liability, lighting, community acceptance and expansion. Public support for pedestrian and multi purpose facilities has been strong in both Atlantic Beach and Emerald Isle. Ms. Sanderson said the walkways have been the best received project during her 24 years in Emerald Isle. She said there has also been a positive economic benefit to the town. Betty Ann Caldwell and Steve years. Their home is filled with exquisite pieces of furniture and fine art collected during their time overseas. Carolyn, originally from Detroit, Michigan, has a B.A. degree in education from Central Michigan University. While in Thailand, Carolyn joined the American Women's Club and volunteered her time working with a fine Asian arts and culture magazine. Carolyn's Clan: From left to right: Carolyn's son-in-law, Jeff; her daughter, Kathy; husband, Jake and Carolyn. The beautiful dogs are: granddogs Maggie and Bailey and the Rifes' Sammy. Hamilton from North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) provided guidance as to placement and design of walkways that meet DOT criteria and are designed for safety. They explained that the minimum standard for the width of a pedestrian sidewalk is 5 feet and is concrete. A multi-purpose facility is 10 feet wide, accommodates both pedestrians and bicyclists and is typically constructed of asphalt. Ms. Caldwell also provided the committee with information on grants and other funding sources. Several members on the committee traveled to Manteo in July to look at its walkway system, paying particular attention to the landscaping and amenity Five years ago, Carolyn and others were invited to meet with Mayor Joan Lamsonattownhallto discuss renevdng the publication of The Shoreline. Unanimously it was agreed that because of his newspaper experience. Bill White would serve as managing editor. Sue Christman returned from a short break to find that she was to be the feature editor and Carolyn Rife and Diane Donovan, because of their computer expertise, would share production responsibilities. Sue continues with The Shoreline as an editor at large. Diane is no longer on staff. Carolyn's responsibilities include checking e-mails and reviewing all the new "stuff" that is sent to The Shoreline for monthly publication. In addition, she completes the six-week calendar that so many residents find indispensable. Carolyn also does preliminary editing and formatting and, together with the managing editor, makes final changes to submitted articles before sending them to the publisher. Carolyn is grateful that there are now many computer savvy people on staff to assist her. Because of them, Carolyn says her updating of new and more sophisticated computer skills is ongoing. r stations along the winding walkway. They met with Allen Russell of DOT and Kermit Skinner, Town Manager of Manteo, who shared vital information about funding, building materials, construction and maintenance. The committee will continue its analysis and exploration of how other towns have provided safe walkways for their citizens and how PKS can respond to the town's residents who desire safe passage along Salter Path. They will be ever mindful of the town's natural environment. Every effort will also be made to identify sources of funding to minimize the cost to the town.
