Around Town
By Bob Ruggiero
Norman and Irene Beattie celebrated
their 50 th
Wedding
anniversary on
September 5
while cruising
to Bermuda
on board the
Norwegian
Cruise liner
Grandeur of
the Seas. The
couple was
married in 1959
while living in
Ottawa, Canada.
Norman had
immigrated
to Canada a
year earlier
from Glasgow,
Scotland, and
was employed
with the National Research Coimcil.
While there, he opted to get Canadian
citizenship. While living in Glasgow,
Norman knew Irene, and when she
joined him in Canada, they were married
in 1959.The couple moved to Montreal,
spent eight years there and decided
to move to the United States after
experiencing the Canadian unrest due
to efforts to nationalize Montreal. Irene
graduated from the Glasgow Nursing
School with a Registered Nurse license;
Norman graduated from Glasgow
University with an engineering degree.
While in Bermuda, the locals celebrated
Labor Day on the
same weekend as
their American
neighbors. Upon
returning from
Bermuda, the
couple traveled to
Florida for three
weeks to enjoy
the late summer
sunshine
Local residents
Vince and Helvi
Larson, traveling
with long-time friends Shirline and
George Holzworth, recently returned
from a two-week visit to Provence,
France. Having an apartment in the
small town of Isle sur Sorgue gave them
anability to UveUkelocals.IslesurSorgue
is located on an island surroxmded by
two branches of the Sorgue River. Many
of the old
moss-covered
waterwheels,
which once
ran the town's
fabric and
paper mills,
are still in
existence
along the
canals running
through the
town. While
enjoying this
beautiful area
of France,
they enjoyed
day trips to
picturesque,
ancient hilltop
villages,
driving to the
summit of Mt. Ventoux, which is the
site of the Tour de France; visiting
Avignon, the Papal Palace and St.
Benezet Bridge where efforts to walk
out on the remaining ruins of the bridge
were hampered by winds of the Mistral,
which frequently gusts up to 60 mph;
and visiting St. Remy, where Vincent
Van Gogh did many of his paintings. It
was difficult for the Larsons to leave this
beautiful part of France with its friendly
people, who were so willing to forgive
their limited French. A returned visit
is definitely plarmed.
Ralph and Evelyn O'Neill purchased
their home in Pine
Knoll Shores in
1990. At that time,
they had busy
and challenging
2 careers. Within a
few years, Ralph
retired and started
spending more
time in Pine
Knoll Shores.
Evelyn continued
her career as a
Commercial
Property Manager, working for a small
real estate company in Silver Spring,
Maryland, managing properties in
Maryland and Virginia. While keeping
pace with the real estate world, she
had the privilege of volimteering her
time with the Metropolitan Police
Boys and Girls Club.
She donated a small
event office in Silver
Spring to the club
and worked with
Washington Redskin
Hall of Famers Charles
Mann and Art Monk
in addition to many
other Redskin players.
Her volunteer work
also included several
years on the Board
of Directors of the
Greater Silver Spring
Chamber of Commerce
and the Montgomery Coimty Economic
Development Committee to help plan
Silver Spring's revitalization. Evelyn
was named one of Silver Spring's
outstanding Business Leaders. Her
future plans include spending time
with Ralph while enjoying the peaceful
beauty of Pine Knoll Shores.
Barbara Bagby, wife of Commander
J.B. Bagby, hosted a luncheon on
November 4 at their home for women
from the Fort Macon Sail and Power
Squadron. Attending the luncheon
were members Cindy Murphy, Helvi
Larson, Mary Heim, Carol Schmidt and
Bobbie Hill. A good time was had by all,
and as usual the food was delicious.
Eleven Pine Knoll Shores' residents
recently spent an extended weekend
exploring the vastness and variety 6f
the state as they experienced "A North
Carolina Sampling." This "Sampling"
was a Travel Team LLC tour for the
Carteret Arts Forum and friends that
began early in the morning on Thursday,
November 6, and concluded in the
evening on Monday, November 9.
Highlights of the "Sampling" included
visits to Old Salem and a tour of the
Museum of Early Southern Decorative
Arts; a wine tasting dinner at the
Harvest Grill at the Shelton Vineyards;
exploration of Asheville with dinner at
Deerpark and a Candlelight Christmas
Evening tour of the Biltmore; a trip on
the Blue Ridge Parkway with stops
at the Visitors' Center and the Folk
Arts Center and Museum; a barbeque
lunch in Lexington; and a private
visit to Jugtown Pottery and a
Raku demonstration at Dirtworks in
Seagrove.
Linda Patton and Patti Dill of Travel
Team, LLC made a very generous
donation to Carteret Arts Forum at the
end of the trip. Their careful plarming
was greatly appreciated by all the
travelers.
