Town Hall 247-4353 Introducing The Shoreline Staff: Tom Powers & Richard Seale By Jacquie Pipkin Tom Powers and his wife of 35 years, Alice, retired to Pine Knoll Shores from Southern Pines, North Carolina. Prior to that, the couple lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and Charlotte, North Carolina. As with so many other PKS retirees, the Powers had vacationed regularly in the area. Their first Weekend Retreat was at The Place at the Beach. Nate lives in Greenville and manages an Applebee's restaurant while daughter-in-law, Kimi, is pursuing her second master's degree at East Carolina University. Daughter Allison recently graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. Currently, she is waitressing while actively looking for a professional position. For 30 years, Tom had managed his own business as a manufacturer's representative for industrial automation products. Alice worked in childcare and also as a pre-school teacher. Tom joined The Shoreline after reading an e-mail requesting volunteers from PKS Town Manager, Brian Kramer. Tom now serves as an official photographer of The Shoreline and writes feature articles as well. Richard Seale with one of his prize catches, but not the one he prizes the most. Why Are We Here? By Kathy Werle What are we doing? Why are we doing it? Where are we going? The elected officials of Pine Knoll Shores came together for a strategic planning meeting February 18 and 19 to answer these critical questions for our citizens. The off-site work sessions began with the thoughtful drafting of the town government's first vision statement: "Our vision is to provide a quality environment in which our citizens are safe and secure, where individual talents flourish and everyone enjoys the natural resources of our area." The drafting of the vision statement was followed by a mission statement to direct the policies and actions of our officials: "It is the Mission of the Town of Pine Knoll Shores to: • provide a concerted and friendly means of promoting health, safety, and social well-being; • develop and implement plans for the continuous improvement of the town; and • encourage the participation of residents in service to the Town and community." To support the town's vision and mission statements, the participants worked on the town's core values, including financial stability, preservation of the environment, citizen involvement, management excellence, structure and superior service. Financial stability is a major focus of any body of government, and to better forecast the cost of funding our town government. Town Manager Brian Kramer presented a five-year revenue, expense, tax forecast for discussion. This was timely as commissioners and Mayor Ken Jones move forward on the 2010-2011 budget process and five year budget forecast.
