beacons, called aids to navigation. Fort Macon Sail and Power Squad ron will be presenting a class on aids to navigation and an on-the-water cruise in Morehead City on May 28. Fort Macon Sail and Power Squadron is a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, a non-profit boating orga nization that promotes boating safety and education in Carteret County. Whether or not you are a boat owner, this cruise is designed to show what the approaches to Morehead City through Beaufort Inlet look like going out and coming back from the sea. Even if you never plan to take your boat out at night, this evening cruise will be fun and informative. Leave the navigating to us and enjoy the company of other boaters. Certi fied instructors will answer ques tions and help identify aids along the cruise. Special emphasis is placed on the identification of specific aids and the meaning of their light characteris tics after dark. We offer serious boat owners a short educational portion of the cruise in the afternoon. This is a free refresher on what the square green and triangular red placards in the water on telephone poles mean and on the system of buoys, ranges and beacons marking the navigable chan nel. The class is at Capt Bill’s Restau rant, 701 Evans Street, in Morehead City. After the class, we will serve a great catered dinner. Outside and a block away, we all board the Carolina Princess at the Morehead City docks. The vessel will go out and come back in before sunset and repeat the same trip after dusk when aids to naviga tion are lighted. We will be able to see how different the aids look in daylight and at night. The event will take place May 28. The cost is $55 for the class, dinner and cruise ($25 for all under age 16 but older than 7). To express your interest, get more information and sign up, please contact Lt/C Richard McKeon by e-mail (rmckeon@ec. rr.com), or phone (463-0208). You can also visit the squadrons Web site at www.fmsps.org to get details and a registration form. Prepayment and registration are required. Meet your Neighbor; Elizabeth Cross By Jill Cross A big welcome is in order to Elizabeth Cross, who recently moved to Pine Knoll Shores from Cornelius, North Carolina. Her son David, granddaughter Britni and me (her daughter-in-law) are happy to have her living one short block away, close enough for spontaneous coffee visits and impromptu family meals. Elizabeth was born in Ashland, Ohio, and lived most of her life in Eastern Long Island. She spent a few years in St. Petersburg, FL, but found it too hot. Elizabeth moved to Cornelius 11 years ago. In Cornelius, Elizabeth lived with her sister Katie. After Katie became too ill to care for herself, she moved in with her daughter Missy. Elizabeth, finding the house in Cornelius too large and too empty, accepted an invitation to stay with us in Pine Knoll Shores. It didn’t take long for Elizabeth to decide to move to Pine Knoll Shores permanently to stay closer to her family. She moved into a house on Cypress Drive just a few weeks ago. Elizabeth talks to her sister daily Elizabeths three other children live far aiid wide but near enough for a flight in for some beach fun a few times a year. Her daughter Christine lives in Reno, Nevada, with her husband, Bert. Daughter Jenny lives in New Jersey with her grown daughter Felicia. Her oldest son, Tim, lives in Austin, Texas. Ehzabeth is hoping her house in Cornelius will sell soon so that she can settle into Pine Knoll Shores completely with no strings attached. Once she gets her house here in ship-shape condition, Elizabeth looks forward to getting to know her neighbors better and to learning her way around the island. Elizabeth is an excellent artist and has already agreed to show some of her paintings at the annual Tree City Fair in Pine Knoll Shores. In April, her works will be displayed at the Bogue Banks Library gallery in Pine Knoll Shores. Eliza beth also looks forward to meeting and networking with other local artists. She wants to see their work and to talk about “artists’ issues,” such as where to buy supplies. Unfortunately, due to arthritis, Elizabeth can’t paint as much as she would like; however, she fully intends to continue painting as much as she can, for the pure pleasure of it.
