By Ken Jones As we roll into the summer season, we’re also rolling into the end of the town and state’s fiscal year—an end and a new beginning. As this edition is published, your Board of Commissioners is preparing for the final vote on the 2011-2012 Pine Knoll Shores Budget. Commissioners have worked diligently to make sure your town is as efficient as possible while taking care of the needs of the citizens and their property year round. I hope this article helps straighten out some misconcep tions I have been hearing from many folks. Almost all property taxpayers in Pine Knoll Shores will have a decrease is their tax bills. The challenge: The infrastructure of our town needs attention and is getting it. In the tax year 2010-2011, we updated water mains and our firefighting capacity This coming year, we will replace the Mimosa Drive Bridge and the heating and air conditioning system at town hall. We are also still working on more efficiency. Our Public Safety Department is in its second full year since the police and fire depart ment were joined to gain efficiencies. Many changes take time in order for the ef ficiencies to begin to be realized. Pine Knoll Shores is ahead of the efficiency curve. Why? Our team—our people. Our team has as its cornerstone a staff that makes sure we manage our resourc es, your money, wisely. Staff members are always looking for better, smarter ways of doing business. Our team has as its backbone, many citizen volunteers. The team is rounded out with expertise from contractors to help us do more with less. This team always has a primary concern in mind—our community. There is a lot going on, and as a cornmunity, a lot to look forward to. Do you have your PARCard? Why not? This card represents government and local busi ness working together to save the cardholder money and incentivize the cardholder to use local businesses, thereby helping local business. The card costs only $25 per year and gives you discounts at the Country Club of the Crystal Coast, Milazzos and Molly’s at the Sheraton Atlantic Beach. Discounts are also available at GLOBE Kids and Gals, and Ernie’s Gift World in the Atlantic Station Shopping Center along with numerous other local businesses. Proceeds from the sale of the card go toward activities put on by our Parks and Recreation Committee. Activities include Con certs in the Park, the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, the Christmas Flotilla, and parades—just to name a few. Our town’s major fundraising event will celebrate its fourth year with the Kayak for the Warriors annual kayak race and bike rides on June 11th. You can and should plan your entire weekend around this event! The night before, there will be a recep tion in Veterans’ Park at town hall. At the reception and the day of the race, there is a silent auction. Kids, adults, fun and competition; Something for everyone. Our town is financially healthy, citizen and visitor friendly, and very, very active. Bring on the summer.
