PINE KNOLL Shores By Veronica Stanley Ihe Pine Knoll Shores Womens Club met on March 25, 9:30 a.m., at town hall. President Barbara Bagby welcomed 43 members and one guest. Hostesses Evelyn O’Neill, Mary Jo Jennings and Barbara Fix presented refreshments on a table deco rated with spring flowers. ViTce President Bonnie Ferheau introduced club member Linda Langheld, who discussed “Dale Carnegie for Today.” As a worker for the Dale Carnegie Institute for 19 years, Linda traveled statewide training people to speak comfortably in both leadership roles and personal relationships. Her methods are based on Carnegie’s book How to Win Friends and Influence People, which focuses on gaining respect as a means of motivating people to action. Linda reviewed Dale Carnegie’s Golden Book and gave each member a copy The book includes principles on becoming a friendlier person, winning people to your way of thinking, being a leader, cultivating a mental attitude that will bring you peace and happiness and keeping your energy and spirits high. Linda’s enthusiastic presentation inspires women to face tasks and solve problems with practicality, caring and a positive outlook. Gail Halada and Loretta Poremba presented scholarship raffle prizes donated by Barbara Zaik (husband Fran’s painting “Springtime”), Kathy Foy (Easter/teapot basket), Linda Langheld (cocktail basket) and by members’ financial contribu tions. Kay Howe noted that scholarship recipient Brenda Hansen plans to continue her education upon graduation from Carteret Community College. Linda Strader reported that the club will again participate in Pine Knoll Shores’ Tree City Fair on April 30 by supplying barbecue sandwiches, tea, desserts and information on the club. Dot Miller noted that the Beach Book Club is reading Sarahs Key, by Tatiana de Rosnay, and the Between the Bookends Club is reading Kate Vaiden, by Reyn olds Price. Pauly Brown, discussing famous women, presented Shirley Temple Black, with whom we all grew up. Shirley Temple starred in 40 motion pictures and TV productions. Although she was a beloved American child star in the 1930’s, her achievements in adult life reached far more people globally. She became a US del egate to the United Nations and a US delegate to many international conferences and summits. She became the first female protocol of the United States. She was US i i Linda Langheld motivates members ambassador to the Republic of Ghana and then to the Czech and Slovak Federal Re public. She also served on the Board of Directors for such major companies as Del Monte and Wajt Disney Productions. Shirley Temple Black credited her drive and perseverance to her mentors Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart. She currently resides with her husband in Woodside, California. The next Pine Knoll Shores Women’s Club Board meeting is May 13, 9:30 a.m., at town hall. The regular meeting is May 20, with a social at 9:30 a.m. and the meet ing at 10 a.m. featuring Leisa Smith Barefoot, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Coastal Carolina. The June 3 meeting will be a luncheon at the Dunes Club with installation of new officers. All women living in Pine Knoll Shores are welcome to join the Club and attend meetings and activities. Members would gladly accompany anyone interested in attending a meeting. Kudos for Local College Administrator Dr. Don Staub, Director of the Carteret Community College’s Title III Grant Program, was notified recently that he has been selected as one of five U.S. community col lege administrators who will visit Russia to learn more about its higher education system and opportunities to develop substantive partnerships with comparable Russian schools. He will join a delegation of U.S. community college administrators who will visit Russia for two weeks in April under the auspices of the Fulbright Scholarship Board. All expenses associated with the scholarly exchange trip are being paid by the Fulbright Scholarship Board. Joining Dr. Staub on the trip will be other higher educTation professionals from Florida, Kansas, Maryland and Massachusetts. Dr. Staub‘s selection was based on his work with the federally funded Title III grant, his research expertise and his involvement in the North Carolina Community College Global Learner Consortium. “I am excited to travel to another continent to brag about what a great school we have here,” Dr. Staub said. “I am looking forward to the give and take of ideas for programs, processes and policies that will be the focal point of the , ■ » trip. Dr. Staub directs the $1.62 million Title III federal grant program that has enabled the college to expand its employee professional develop ment program to improve student retention and success by expanding advising, distance learning and assessment of institutional performance. As director, Dr. Staub oversees one of the project’s three main objectives: development and implementation of a college-wide outcomes assess ment plan. “This is a great honor for one of our own to be selected by the Fulbright Scholars program,” said Dr. Kerry Youngblood, President of Carteret Community College. “Dr. Staub has done an excellent job with the Title III grant program and has helped us significantly.” Dr. Staub joined Carteret Community College in December 2004 as a part-time grant writer. He holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Eastern Michigan Uni versity While at EMU, Staub was also the director of the Office of Collaborative Education. Dr. Staub, his wife, Dr. Selva Staub, who works at Pamlico Community College, their son. Bora and their dog, Sparty, happily reside in their handyman’s dream in Oriental. I May2D11 I The Shoreline 29
