June Highlights Charlie McBriarty The month of June has several noteworthy days including the first day of the month that marks the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season that continues until November 30. Since there is a possibility of Pine Knoll Shores being affected by hurricanes the following information is offered: There are five categories of hurricanes: • Category 1 - wind velocity of 74 to 95 miles per hour (mph) and surge of 4 to 5 feet. • Category 2 - winds of 96 to 110 mph and surge of 6 to 8 feet. • Category 3 - winds of 111 to 130 mph and surge of 9 to 12 feet. • Category 4 - winds of 131 to 155 mph and surge of 13 to 18 feet. • Category 5 - winds exceeding 155 mph and surge in excess of 18 feet. The National Hurricane Center has identified the following alphabetical listing of 21 tropical storms having the possibility of becoming a hurricane this year: Arlene Lee Bret Maria Cindy Nate Don Ophelia Emily Phillippe Franklin Rina Gert Sean Harvey Tammy Irene Vince Jose Whitney Katia Another weather related event that occurs in June is Summer Solstice, the lon gest day of the year, marking the beginning of summer on Tuesday June 21. Tuesday June 14 is Flag Day. Since this is a special day to fly the stars and stripes a few items of flag-etiquette are offered. • The flag should be flown from sunrise to sunset. • If the flag is to be flown at night it should have a light on it. • The American flag is always flown at the top with other flags below. • The flag should not touch the ground. • Did flags should be burned or buried, not thrown in the trash. Finally, of course, we can’t forget Fathers Day on Sunday June 19. It may not be a surprise that Mothers Day has been widely recognized much longer than has Father’s Day, although a 4,000 year old clay tablet with an inscription wishing a father good health and a long life was discovered in Babylon and it has been cited by some scholars as the origin of this holiday. However the current holiday devoted to dads is only about 100 years old. Sonora Louise Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington is credited with having the idea whfle listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909. Her father Henry Jackson Smart, whose wife had died when Sonora was 16, raised her and her five siblings and she believed that he deserved a day in recognition of the parental role he played in their lives. Her efforts resulted in the city of Spokane celebrating Father’s Day on June 19, 1910. The idea quickly spread to other cities and states across the country. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge recommended it as a national holiday. President Lyndon Johnson identified Father’s Day as the third Sunday in June but it wasn’t until the presidency of Richard Nixon in 1972 that third Sunday in June officially became Fathers Day.
